Hey guys, I hope this doesn't fall under requests for recorded programs.

Anyway, why I'm asking is I'm moving overseas on Friday, and I'd like to keep in line with the state of affairs in NZ should I need to know what's going on. I'm also not sure I've got the right hardware to do it myself, although I do have the knowledge.

Would a DM500 do the trick, as I know it has an LAN interface, but the only problem is that South Africa's internet infrastructure may not be up to task, to streaming a raw DVB feed, without buffering and carrying on.

How are you planning on streaming?

Do you already have a pc set up with a tuner?

I'd be tempted to record via a tv tuner...then put the recordings in plex. Use a pvr program like media portal or nextpvr (the latter is my personal preference)

This gives you the advantage that it will convert the recordings into something more palatable for the internet. I'd also either look at DVB-S (mpeg2 SD) or only record the +1 channels as the file sizes will be much smaller.

For live tv there might be a live tv plex channel for media portal - i don't know if it's still being developed. There is a simple one (full disclosure I wrote it), for NextPVR.

do any of the DNS services like Unotelly, Unblock etc offer services to NZers overseas to watch TVNZ On Demand, TV3 etc?

I don't think so. Also apart from the news none of it is live.

I'm streaming TV over my LAN from time-to-time using a Hauppauge Broadway that I impulse purchased at a clearance sale. I stream it to the office PC, the spare room TV which doesn't have an aerial, and to my tablet over WiFi when I'm cooking in the kitchen). It has a tuner, and will tune all the freeview channels just fine as well as take a composite feed from my Sky box.

It works OK and, according to the documentation, is designed to work over the internet as well, with various bit rate settings depending on the quality of your connection. However, I can only have a view on LAN performance, as I haven't tried anything else.

I don't think so. Also apart from the news none of it is live.

Actually, UnoTelly says they do. TVNZ and TV3 are both listed on their 'Channels' page, although I've never tried them from outside the country.

You're right about the lack of live coverage though.

I hadnt heard of Unotelly, so decided to sign up to see what would happen. You need to change some IP address's in your network settings which was straight forward. Then tried out TV3. All it did was go to the TV3 ondemand page (which is not a live stream). Then I tried Discovery Ch UK, that also just went to their webpage with no live stream options.
So it looks like you can only watch a stream via Unotelly only if the original TV website offers a live stream.

Yes but the whole point is that you can watch the OnDemand services from TV3 and TVNZ which are otherwise unavailable outside NZ.

Forget about any live streams via the internet because currently, none of our main broadcasters except Sky offer that.

It depends if those pages have a live stream on them or not. I know TVNZ live streams the breakfast show and 6pm news, but on their news site. The top level domain for those and for OnDemand is tvnz.co.nz, so if Unotelly works for the main url then you should be okay. Google TVNZ Live Stream and see how you go. They have replays of what has live streamed when a stream isn't actually live, so you should be able to run a test.

You might not have so much luck with TV3 because their live streams are under the 3News url. http://www.3news.co.nz/Video/3NewsLiveStream

You can always contact Unotelly and ask them if they'll add that to their list of channels. They are continuously increasing their offering.
