I've just installed a friend's JU series Samsung TV and was very impressed with it's features.

With just the one device he now has

Netflix (US)
All UK smart hub apps including BBC iPLayer, ITV, All4 etc

NZ Freeview channels (in HD where available)
Built in 2 tuner PVR with excellent grid based HD EPG
Ability to record from EPG (including series link) As easy to use as MySky or Tivo. (external HDD required)

But here's the kicker...
FreeviewPlus works perfectly. ie he has direct access to NZ on Demand channels from the EPG (despite smart hub country being set to UK)

Only change from MySky setup was installing UHF aerial and Unotelly.
The Samsung JU series has the new Tizen OS so I presume the lower end J series would work just as well.

I don;t suppose you have tried or looked into Plex for these sets? Having the ability to play local content would be the ultimate (I mean rips, not recorded programs).  Or does it just have a DLNA based player?

Have not tried but there is a Samsung Plex app available in the smart hub so shouldn't be a problem.

timbosan: Answering my own question - YES!

Sorry I forgot to mention that I have an Apple TV + Beamer which does more than what I require.

Plex works perfectly on the new (Tizen) Smart Hub (as it did on the older ones). Also the inbuilt TV upscaling makes quite a difference for 1080 rips. 4K Netflix is also superb.

I am also interested in if you can give TVPlayer a go - http://tvplayer.com/plus  Apparently they have a Samsung app and the base package is free (the Plus package is 5 pounds a month)

Amazon has an app for most smart TVs, so should work fine on Samsung (have to have country set to US/UK etc).

I don't think the Samsung app is available yet - at least I couldn't find it last night

I am under the impression that you can only have apps from 1 location installed at a time. So how does your friend have US Netflix with UK Smart Hub apps? How does the FreeView+ work with the on demand apps while still having the UK setup?

I would love to have the US setup for Netflix and the rest of the applications they have and still use the Freeview+ features.

The Netflix app is common for all countries. I set the Netflix location to USA (or any country) using Unotelly Dynamo.
The Freeview plus on demand does not use the NZ apps, so region can be set to UK giving access to BBC iPlayer and ITV player etc, yet NZ on demand still works.

I was also surprised that everything worked as well as it did.

I am thinking its time to upgrade my 40" Samsung TV, may wait for OLED but this is an interesting thread, I had no idea you could do this currently from an off the shelf TV.

I have Unotelly, so I think I understand how you are doing this. Where are you entering in the Unotelly DNS for Netflix and where are you putting it in for the UK settings? I assume that they both use the same DNS in the Network settings of the TV, but on your Unotelly Dynamo settings on your computer you just set it up for Netflix as USA and use the UK DNS for the smarthub stuff?

I am about to get either a JS9000 or JS8000. So from day one when I set it up when it ask me what is my country I will say US. I will just put in the US dns and set my Unotelly Dynamo for the US as well. My main reason for wanting the US Smarthub is to have access to HBOGO, SiriusXM and Amazon Instant Video. If I can use the NZ Freeview+ and have access to the NZ on demand and from the flick of a button have access to Game of Thrones or other HBO content in HD I will be pretty happy.

Is this the correct line of thinking?

Forget your smart TV - extremely limited. The ultimate cable cutting device is an Android TV box with Kodi installed - much cheaper too!
