Until recently I got all freeview channels on my Veon TV with a UHF aerial(without using a decoder) Whats changed is a grey box popup message "Network change! Cell removed" with Yes & No options or OK on remote to exit & then TV3 & TV4, 8,9 & 11 disappears - when I tune TV the channels return & the same grey box msg "Network change! Cell removed" and within minutes the same channels disappear again no matter what options we select after this msg appears.
There is another small satellite dish outside/& cable inside our rental cabin - with a male jackpoint plug we haven't had to use, plus we got an old sky freeveiw box without a remote.

This has been seen before and it was an issue with the freeview transmission.

Thanks andrewcnz,

that freeviewforum link is the first one I've seen with that same grey box popup msg
"Network change! Cell removed"

Looks like it happened in Wanganui about May 2014.  Not sure if im the only one affected in Gisborne.

Anyway I sent a email to mediaworks & transmission providers http://www.jda.co.nz/television
to let them know there channels 3,4,8,9,11 keep dissapearing.

Jda website says they: operates the Freeview Terrestrial Platform in the following regions: Whangarei
Rotorua
Taupo
Gisborne
Whanganui
Wairarapa
Nelson
Timaru
Invercargill

I hope its not an issue with our Veon TV aswell as it works well if not for channels keep disappearing after retuning.

Nwice one joshhill96,

Thanks to Geekzone Forum, Freeview Forum, non-email reply from Mediaworks, non-email reply from JDA
& Ainsley the lovely Freeview 0800 373 384 customer service lady.

I'll trust my instincts and say something smells off!

1. does this mean Freeview has the ability to block out multiple channels from any one free broadcaster like Mediaworks
or was Freeview only meant to block pay channels like Sky TV?

2. Is this a sign to come - Is it possible Free channels are heading towards pay channels?
Just weting our apetite with free TV like those favorites at the s/market.

3. And if I could receive all freeview channels except TAB (before Tues 5 Oct) with just a UHF aerial then
why were(& still are) so many people being duped into buying satellite receivers/decoders/boosters/amplifiers/satellite dishes -
when I'm just happy with the one UHF aerial that works - & beware Freeview installers will say anything to come over to your
house and sell you everything you don't really need to watch Freeview.  eg. today one Freeview installer on the 0800 no. above
offered to sell me another UHF aerial, a aerial booster, come over and adjust my aerial or told me to try my old sky satellite
receiver - & then I told him so why do I get all the other channels except one broadcaster Mediaworks.

4. You can ignore or disprove everything I just listed here - because I enjoy speculating about real things that are happening in NZ
But its also good to know the truth about just how FREE is FREEVIEW.

5. Last point - why are the lastest TVs like my 2mth old Veon and Akai's (as mentioned by  Graeme Dearness on Freeview forum)
are these TVs coming out with technology that can block so called Freeview TV

Very last point - I did a quick wiz around the net(lazy research) on UHF/Mediaworks/Freeview nz/Oaktree Capital Management/Ironbridge Capital  - So UHF doesn't seem to be going anywhere soon so my one UHF aerial should be sweet for a while, however although Freeview NZ is called a non-profit organisation (that probably means its heavily influenced by central govt.) Now the interesting thing with Mediaworks is that they are under pressure to perform having being in debt $700M and on good behaviour from receivership in 2013 and gaining a handup with a $43M loan guarantee form the govt ie. as guarantor. So this brings us back to Oaktree Capital Investment - as 78% interest in Mediaworks the rest by Australian Ironbridge.  Now from this short exercise we can only hope that everything is all cool or good with Mediaworks - because $700M + $43M debt must have a political govt watchdog in there somewhere.  Enter Freeview NZ has the ability and can block all Mediaworks Channels.

1 . no
2 . no
3. TAB channel left Freeview and went to SKY months ago, it is not part of Freeview anymore

Your issues indicate you are missing the Mediaworks "mux" group of channels , it is quite likely to be an antenna / installation issue. What does the signal level say on the channels that you do get?

The rest of your post is paranoid ranting!

All my channels signal strengths are over 74 and 80 or more. I still get 1,2,5,6,7,10.12,13,16,20,21,24,25,26,27,34
so if  3,4,8,9,11 has disappeared since last Tuesday 5th and affected others on freeview forum (Jo,Tony loftus @ ess,  Graeme Dearness )

Apsattv comment " it is quite likely to be an antenna / installation issue" is typical of the kind of crap Installers tell people - when the same UHF aerial seems to work perfectly well for the majority of the channels.

Its great Apsattv knows that the TAB channel is on Sky now because he will probably quite happily sell you a satellite receiver to watch Freeview when all you may need is one UHF aerial.

You know when the truth hurts when the so-called aerial experts resort to name calling and to ignore electrical tradesman like me who question everything in order to know the truth.

I found the difference between Digital Terrestrial Transmission (DTT) and DTH.  DTT is what enables Freeview|HD to be received by 86% of New Zealand using a UHF aerials. Direct to Home, or DTH is what enables Freeview Satellite to be received by 100% of New Zealand homes using a satellite dish.  Freeview NZ provide a map of UHF coverage by location link: http://www.freeviewnz.tv/faq-library/getting-freeview/coverage-maps/

My post is very real and happening - & more people are saying Mediaworks channels are disappearing from their TV.  So naturally Installers can use it as a chance to sell more aerials, satellite receivers & dishes.  But its anyone guess why its happening.

An expansion of Apsattv's response...

The channels are broadcast in groups; one group per transmitter/frequency. People describe these groups using various terms such as "transport streams", "muxes", "multiplexes", "transponders", "transmitters", "frequencies"...

Freeview HD (terrestrial - received with an aerial) has 4 groups in Kordia areas and 3 groups in JDA areas.

  1. TVNZ - all TVNZ channels
  2. MediaWorks - all MediaWorks channels + The Shopping Channel
  3. Kordia / JDA - PRIME, ChoiceTV, Maori TV, Te Reo, Parliament, Firstlight, ChineseTV, TV33 + all regional and radio channels
  4. Kordia 2 (WorldTV) [not available in JDA areas] - Apna, Yes Shop, TV29, Hope Channel, Shine TV

Note: TVSN Shopping and Al Jazeera are in group 4 for Kordia areas and group 3 for JDA areas.
Note 2: Hawkes Bay has an additional group carrying Hawke's Bay TV and Shine TV.

(Freeview Satellite (received with a satellite dish, like Sky) has 4 groups which are listed here:
http://freeviewforum.co.nz/forum/topics/new-satellite-program-groups)

Freeview does have the ability to mark channels as "only available in areas X, Y and Z" (or "not available in areas X, Y and Z". That ability is used to hide channels that aren't available in your area (such as the regional channels for regions you don't live in). This is not pay-TV-by-stealth, and has absolutely nothing to do with Sky, MediaWorks' debt issues, or MediaWorks' ownership.

You are having trouble receiving the Freeview HD MediaWorks group. That could be due to:

  1. A JDA fault in the channel marking/flagging (as described above).
  2. An issue with your reception equipment (aerial, cabling etc.).

The offers made by the installers would be entirely appropriate for resolving a reception issue. In other words: they're trying to help you!

Before you start accusing people of trying to rip you/others off, or a greater conspiracy, I'd advise that you go and learn how it works yourself.

You have a Freeview Terrestrial TV. It has a DVB-T tuner in it. DVB-T is broadcast over UHF frequencies, hence why you only need a UHF aerial.
Satellite boxes use DVB-S, and are useful in areas where there is no DVB-T (UHF) signal (and that is quite a few areas).

Apsattv mentioned signal degradation because that could (and usually is) the cause of a problem like this. On DVB-T (and S), groups of channels are bundled into a multiplex (mux), and in your case, you are not receiving one of those muxes - the Mediaworks one, which are channels 3,4,8,9 and 11). The muxes are broadcast on different UHF frequencies, and being digital, it is either all on, or all off, so if you aerial is not picking up the frequency for the Mediaworks Mux in your area strong enough, you will get nothing.
It appears that is not that case in your instance, and someone else mentioned earlier in the thread that there was an issue with that mux, and it was being worked on. Patience grasshopper.

Yes I admit I am bitter my cheap DVB-T Veon TV retunes every channel perfectly clear and within minutes that same group of mediaworks channels are blocked and disappear.  So according to what trig42 is saying about Muxes/frequency/signal/its either all on or all off - this is not the case as trig42 says, because I do get 5 mediawork channels but within minutes those same channels are blocked and disappear. Also before last Tuesday all the channels worked fine for 3months since I lived here.

trig42 I never used the words rip-off but you do get the general idea of what I think about Installers who push the more expensive satellite options over more cost effective UHF aerial/DVB-T option - because they often have an interest or work for pay-television operators like Sky, hoewever satellite receivers may be more cost effective as the price of some UHF aerials.

My advice to trig42 is that you go learn that i'm going to be as dramatic and sensationalize the saga of why all my Mediaworks channels suddenly appear on my TV and then mysteriously disappear from my TV.  I mean who doesn't like magicians & rabbits plus I do get to learn by being on geekzone freeview forums - this is my first post, & exactly what I wanted to do & learn from other Geeks.  If other Geeks get uptight about comments on my post - I accept and welcome all replies.

Hi to those affected by lost channels,

Looks like the problem has been resolved now here in Gisborne - SO GO TRY retune your TV from your Menu and select Auto Tuning/DTV/NZ and all your channels that you had before last Tues should all return hopefully like mine have - and that pesky grey box popup msg hasn't come back no more!

Lasted 7days.  Thanks to all those involved.  Hope they remember how to fix it for the next time it happens.
