I have only ever had freeview UHF before, but now our new house is not able to receive UHF, which means satellite only. I vaguely remember something about satellite having a polarised signal, so can I use two receivers through the one dish or will they interfere with each other?

You have to turn desq switch OFF on one of them and or the LNB power setting (the function that does the V/H changes) Or use a single power-pass splitter/joiner.

And you can only watch 1 polarity on both at any one time. If you set it on a channel which is V, the other unit will only see other V channels. If its changed to H the opposite is true. NZ ones tend to be at about 45deg tilt so both are in phase when changed. Lyngsat D1/2 will show you the channels and polarity. From memory most are on one, whereas the CH7 aussie feeds etc are on the other

It depends. The LNB on the dish is powered by a satellite receiver, with the DC voltage sent up the cable determining the polarity (vertical or horizontal) signal sent back down the cable. Thus the output from an LNB can only be on one polarity at a time.

Given all the Freeview transponders are on Optus D1 horizontal, a simple satellite splitter is all that is needed, as long as that is all you want to watch. Splitters up to 8 way are available.

If you are wanting more complex, either multiple satellites, or both polarities at the same time from the same satellite, then you are going to need LNB(s) with multiple outputs that work independently of each other and/or a satellite multiswitch.

Basically, 2 receivers off one dish is just fine if your requirements are simple (i.e. just Freeview).

What about multiple LNBs, or dual throat LNBs? Then there is no conflict. The dish is just a reflector, after all.

Excellent, thanks very much. Requirement is just for freeview and the house already has a splitter installed. Sounds like we should be fine to buy a second receiver and plug it in. Will desq being on on both receivers blow something? Should I have it turned off on one before connecting them to the wall jack?

OK, you're good to go. You only need DiSEqC turned on (and configured correctly) if you have a complex setup, likely with a multiswitch. Just leave it off.
