We've a few things in 4:3 ratio and selecting that aspect brings up grey sidebars on each side of the picture which is quite distracting. Googling around finds references to a setting that would change this (to black), but I cannot find it on our TV. Anyone know it's accessible anyhow? Thanks.

Menu button > Picture > Advanced Settings > Side Bar - I recommend setting it to the highest option you can stand, as it helps prevent image retention which can be just as distracting.

Brilliant!!! Thanks... I nearly missed "Advanced Settings' as it's not there until you move down. There's mention too of the 'image retention' thing. I thought that was the 'burn in' problem CRTs had (and didn't apply to plasmas). But either way how can changing the sidebar color (where there's no picture anyway) matter ?

I set it 'off' at least for now, perhaps unwisely but we'll enjoy the 4:3 ratio much more !

I believe it's because with the image completely off on the sides, instead of a shade of grey, that segment is actually "off", so any prior image may be retained on it, which can be quite distracting.

Interesting, guess we'll see.... but kind of begs the question if black retains any prior image nothing could ever fade to black. LOL perhaps we'll be real quick getting to 4:3 at first switch on!
