Hi,

Does anyone know what kind of programs TV3 will show in HD and are they going to use full 1080p?
Also interested to know if they will show the Hamilton V8's in HD...

Thanks.

I don't think any of the broadcasters are plaaning on using 1080p. I think 720p or 1080i will be the best we can hope for to begin with anyway.

TV3 are using 1920 x 1080i25. No broadcasters anywhere in the world use 1080p because of bandwidth constraints. V8s won't be in HD because TV3 probably don't have any HD cameras or any HD outside broadcast capability. HD content will solely be US programs like CSI, Prison Break etc.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

TV3 will usher in high-definition broadcasting on Freeview with prime-time show Boston Legal on April 1...

The TV3 high-definition line-up will extend to other popular shows including CSI, CSI: New York, Prison Break, My Name Is Earl, NCIS and Bones.

Australian TV shows Home and Away, So You Think You Can Dance Australia, Rove and the new crime drama Underbelly will also get the high-definition treatment...

I believe Shy has a HD OB unit.  Wonder if Mediaworks could contract the coverage out to Sky  with some sort of delayed coverage on Sky much as Sky used to do with other sports before they bought Prime... or is that being too simplistic??

From the Herald article:
"Mr Allen said all TV3 standard-definition broadcasts on the Freeview terrestrial platform would be upgraded to high-definition to improve their quality."

I don't understand this logic, and it's not the only place I've seen it. I *think* they think it's true, not because professional broadcast upscalers are likely to be better quality than STB or home display upscalers, but because they actually think upscaling *in and of itself* improves the picture. Which of course it doesn't.
