Hi all,

When I select prefer AC3 in Media Portal I get the AC3 stream - the nice blue light on my Sony 1200ES reciever lites up - but it doesnt seem to include a centre channel ??? I had the same problem when using DVBViewer also.

Any ideas?

The content might not be encoded into 5.1 discrete channels?  Think I read somewhere that it's just being broadcast as stereo (2 channels) at present, even though it identifies as AC3 (which normally means a min of 5.1 channels).

AC3 broadcasts aren't always 5.1 - the AC3 streams will be regular stereo and only 5.1 when the there are shows that are in 5.1

Ditto here in Auckland off Waiatarua.  TVNZ AC3 channels are gone with just the AAC channels remaining.

this is a shame if they are not going to use/offer AC3 when it goes live.

I think they will be AC3/DD encoded with the HE-AAC codec instead of discrete AC3 streams as we have had for the last few weeks.  So once unwrapped and decoded, there will be 5.1 channels (for content that is native 5.1).  I had been using the discrete AC3 streams instead of the AAC ones to avoid the still outstanding sync issues with using the Monogram AAC decoder.  I guess we just have to wait for that to become more mature, or another alternative.

I still dont know why they have chosed he-aac over aac when the sbr is designed to operate at low bitrates like 24-48kbps stereo.

Not being able to make a decent listen means I cant really judge it, but thankfully it will be better then what sky funnels down on most channels not matter what they do virtually.

My receivers dont seem to want to take a 2.0 ac3 stream and do prologic on them which may make things a PITA if I have to change between analog/pcm out and the bitstream out manually depending on if the shows in 5.1 or not.

Ah well. Perpaps its time to upgrade the dinosaurs ;)

Well TV 3 has just turned AC3 back on again. Wonder if any of the US programming will be going with with the original AC-3 audio?

I read somewhere that when DTT officially launches this week TV3 will be in HD, but won't have their sound upgraded until later in the year.
