No output,  red LED for a moment when plugged in,  then green. no response from front power button.

Guess that's it?   Our second Dish thing that's just died (and this had been back for repair a while ago).

What non-Dish tuner could I replace it with?  For use with SD TV, composite or component..  don't need to record/USB port. Had a look on Trademe but didn't see much under $100 (and Dish seems to have the market cornered).

Dish, still your best bet IMO.

The T2100 is the replacement for the T1020. It does FreeviewPlus with a WiFi connection (so has the OnDemand apps built in).

Thanks but we think Dish are almost guaranteed to fail and keen to try something else... and don't need Freeview..  just TV1 @ 3 will do...

OK, good luck with finding a box then. I do not know of any other brands in the market. The Warehouse may have something, but pretty sure they sell DishTV product now too.

Try a CGA claim with DishTV - they are based in Hamilton. I have had a satellite box fixed by them out of warranty, and they are pretty decent to deal with. IMO a TV tuner with no moving parts (like the T1020) should last a good 5-10 years.

You may be able to eBay/AliX something, it it may work. May not too.

To get 1 and 3,  you need Freeview, there is no other way (apart from Sky).

Panasonic do them, but they have PVRs built in, and will cost 3-4 times the price of a Dish box.

Maybe buy a new TV with the tuner built in.

I've seen folk here mention a TiVo (or similar) but I can't find one for sale anywhere. Thanks for the thoughts...  will keep looking...

I meant not essential it be "freeview approved" whatever that means (apart from you can't time skip to avoid ads).

Aren't they just a meaningless bureaucracy that maybe setup the EPG (total disaster that it is!). They didn't take over the transmission or anything, did they ?

No, you may be able to get a DVB-T tuner box, and it may work, but I'd almost put money on it that it'd be more of a hassle and less reliable than a Dish box.

TiVo would be great, but they are pretty rare now (TradeMe would be your best bet).

With any of the non-freeview approved boxes, EPG (7-day) support may be pretty awful (all of them though should have the Now/Next EPG I think).

If you want something that won't tend to fail too soon and don't want to record then just get a new cheap TV.

I bit the bullet... Warehouse had 20% off... got a Dish T1000n.  It's just for a second room but the TV is an $8000 job... analogue... too good to chuck out. 12 years old though.

@B1GGLZ is right. A new cheap TV 32" or smaller will have tuner inbuilt, have a much better picture than you likely have, and not cost that much more than a good decoder.

$15 aliexpress dvb-t2 box works great for a friend who needed one.

Guide sort of worked when I last looked, but that doesnt really matter, it just stays on tv one to make the grandparent that stays with them happy. That is the same one that yells at people to answer the phone when there is one ringing on TV.

An $8000 TV of that age may do HD or should at least support component video. What model is it?

It's pre HD. But I remember seeing the same model with "Hi Def" on the front.  I wrote to Panasonic asking what this "HI Def" means but never got a reply.  It's model TH-42PV30 with component inputs but they're used to connect to a (just as old) DVD recorder (Pioneer -has component out but not in). Like Rich said the box stays on TV1 and is only used for recording source. Good enough for us..   when you fellas get a bit older you'll find little difference between SD/HD. Both blurry as hell!

It is a 1024x768 pixels HD television. It accepts HD over VGA but possibly not at 50Hz. It accepts a 1080i50 signal over component which non Freeview approved receiver boxes should do.
