If TVNZ and canwest get together and tell sky the want their content then they broadcast it in HD. Unencripted.
If they refuse then dont let them have the content.
Sky liong used the argument that since the content was taxpayer funded that they shiuld be able yo broadcast it on sky, well just stipulate that they get the taxpayer content for free to broadcast... they broadcast it unencypted for all tax payers to veiw after all it does not cost them any extra.

Freeview are upgrading their two half transponders in 2018 to DVB-S2 H.264. You'll have to wait till then.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Personally dont care to much as theres other free ways to watch HD content and ad free for those programs that matter;)
More the principal of it, imho sky should never got freeveiw content, i still remember tv6 tv7 and kids zone...all run while the funding lasted then either closed or given to sky ..... its also a waste of bandwidth to have the exact channel broadcasting practically on the same statelitte on two frequencies!

Wonder how long before the campaign to get everyone to upgrade their satellite boxes begins

I don't understand anything about this thread.

1.  Your points are unclear. While we all make typos and I don't want this to become a debate about grammar police, I suspect they would be easier to understand, and better debated, if you tried to use proper grammar, spelling, and correct words.

2.  TVNZ and Canwest probably want their material on Sky. Sky decoders are in about 50% of households and the free-to-air broadcasters rely on advertising revenue, which is directly tied to their audience. If they pulled their material off Sky, which they could do, they would lose money. It's not clear why they would want to do this?

3.  Except for a couple of exceptions that get NZ On Air funding, the content you refer isn't taxpayer funded at all. It's advertising funded.

4.  It may not cost Sky any extra to un-encrypt the HD content. But why would they? It's a business decision, they clearly think there is benefit in being able to offer their subscribers a HD feed, and they are footing the bill for the transponder. Plus, really, who cares? The vast majority of people get a terrestrial feed which is in HD, and the number who rely on satellite but don't have Sky is a few percent of the viewership base. Certainly not enough for TVNZ and Canwest to justify a large potential viewer/advertising loss by yanking their content, so try and improve the picture quality a bit for this small group. Especially when Freeview is going to HD over satellite in 2018 anyway.

Strange... Why would you decide to upgrade to old technology two year in the future. HVEC / H.265 is now mainstream, UHD tv sets are now mainstream.

I would hope an upgrade in the year 2018 supports H.265, and UHD resolution, and ideally High Frame Rate (i.e. 2160p60).

Remember this is what we are stuck with for the next decade.

UHD sets aren't in theory mainstream (and the decoders for H.265 satellite transmissions aren't mainstream given the modulation that will be used, i.e., DVB-S2X, has only recently had the standard ratified). dvb.org estimated the current German figure for UHD sets at only 3% of households. Predictions for Europe are that UHD transmissions will start around 2023.

Note: Sky's new boxes support neither H.265 or UHD let alone DVB-S2X.

P.S. To be stuck with HD until 2024 or so isn't too bad. 1080i is certainly an improvement over the compressed to buggery 576i muck that Sky continue to churn out on the SD channels and Sky (and Freeview) will have upgraded many of the current channels to 1080i by then.

It's not Canwest! The Canadians left these shores 10 years ago. Can we go with Mediaworks please?

The biggest down slide was destroying what was TV 4 and creating the abomination called Bravo
