So Freeview|HD soft launches on 2 April.  But what does it really mean?

TVNZ have stated that they will show no HD content until the Olympics. But does this mean they will start showing other HD content from then?

TV3 are already showing some HD content.  Shows that I am aware of include Prison Break and Bones.  What else are they showing or intend to show in HD?

Maybe we can get a bit of a thread going to discuss current and future HD content via Freeview|HD.  This may help people decide if and when to take the plunge...

I'm pretty sure that TV3 are planning to show pretty much everything they can get hold of that is made in HD. Starting with Boston Legal tonight.  Also the upscaled content on TVNZ looks really good - the Wahene disaster doco last night look fantastic.

If you're getting Freeview to watch HD content you'll be very disappointed.

People's expectations that every program these days is filmed in WS and HD is a long way from being reality.

But what does it really mean?

That very soon we'll have TV's with integrated tuners and digital TV will become the defacto viewing format in NZ.

But will the built in digital tuners suppor the HD format the Freeview are using?
Aren't we one of the only (or one of the few)countries that use this type of HD format? (h.246 & LATM AAC)

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Yes.

We are one of the few countries at present (after Norway and trials in France) using H.264 and AAC-LATM however it's very much become the standard that new countries adopting DVB-T will be using.

TVNZ have said that regular HD programs will not happen until 2009  .  The Olympics are a one off this year..
