I wonder how this new AMD Phenom X3 platform and ATI HD 3200 GT would perform with our DVB-T HD using H.264?

And check this HTPC:

I might have to ask AMD for a demo machine. But it would have to be small enough for a HTPC - it's hard to beat the Mac mini in the lounge but the Mac mini is simply not grunty enough for TV3...

ATI HD 3200 GT - well since it's ATI its not going to work well.
You dont need 3 cores if you have hardware enabled i thought?
A simple single core should cope shouldn't it?

Does the current software take advantage of the multi-cores?  If not then it would be no fast on a single, dual or quad-1 core processor.  It would be as fast as using one core.

Is there anyway you can test it, by instructing the computer to use only one core?  (Like Process Lasso;)

What would you use for your DTB decoding hardware.  Would make a nice machine for benchmarking the different DTB cards that are on the market. (hint hint :))

So what's the problem with ATI and our DVB-T HD H.264?

I know it looks like the preference in these forums is for NVIDIA.

I am using a Mac mini with Intel integrated graphics and it works ok, except for TV3 1080i which gets strange with frame drops and TV6 which is showing the wrong colours (and I was told Intel won't do a thing about the problem) - but TV One, TV2 works fine.

But I certainly wouldn't mind trying an AMD solution.

AFAIK both DVBVIEWER and Cyberlink Power DVD H.264 decoder taker advantage of multicore and hardware decoding (if available).

This thread: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=83&TopicId=20310 has many people using ATI cards and having issues as soon as they move to Nvidia cards the problem disapears.

Works "ok" then saying it only works correctly for only 2 stations shows that setup it not suitable. sure you may be happy with it but its not good enough to recommend others to get.

Separate problems. I was just saying that there are at least three solutions: NVIDIA, Intel, ATI.

It seems NVIDIA works well all the time. It seem ATI has problems. And I know for sure the Intel graphics are not doing their job.

Thanks for the link with the ATI problem.

Thanks from looking at the videos, and seeing the core usage worms, it looks like they do.

I still would like to see a few of the DVB-T's on the market compared.

Just saw the 2nd movie.  Imagine living without all these cables. (picture of a dozen cables)
Well that's doesn't tax my imagination much as I have non now. :)

I heard reports that AMD has manage to make a loss (and they seem to be getting better at it)
ever since the brought ATI.  Not that it wasn't a bad deal... So I head that they are going to just to using 8 cores, to capture market or what ever it's called.  I think it sounds like a great deal for the consumer, especially as these videos show that AMD have got a nice multicore system working.

I think phenom should work perfectly even without hardware decoding.

I'm running dvb-t perfectly with an inbuilt ati x1250 (absolutely no hardware acceleration), and an amd athlon x2 4200+ (2.2Ghz).

Everything works well for me, so it should for you too.

For what it's worth my pick would be a Core 2 Duo. I just got an E8400 and I can't recommend it enough. Nvidia would be my pick for graphics as well.
