Anyone heard anything on PlayTV for the PS3? - i have been holding off from going to a Pc decoder to get HD freeview in the hopes that PlayTV is just around the corner... I have an aging pc in x64 single core AMD 1GB ddr 2-2-5. i stuck a 8800gts in when they first came out but obviously the rest of the machine is a bottle neck. The pc is the firewall for the PS3 for internet with a dual NIC so has to be on whenever i use the ps3 for internet gaming etc... I am completely unaware of decoders and what is required but it looks like i could get away with Hauppauge WinTV-NovaT 500HD PCI Dual Tuner TV Receiver. I'd prefer to wait for PlayTV but can't find anything on the net for release in NZ.
I am currently running vista ultimate sp1 with a DVI to HDMI connector into 1080p TV.
Will the novat 500HD work ok for me in the interim?
Thanks in advance and agologies for my ignorance....

You can download the Playstation Day videos for free from the Playstation Store. Its mainly Europe based, but they talk about PlayTV coming out over there in Sept, and then Home being released at the end of the year.

I hope its released here at the same time, as my AGP graphics card isnt powerful enough to handle TV3, so i'm holding out for PlayTV.

I'm waiting for PlayTV to come out, part of the reason I got my PS3 (loving it, over the network it has access to around 850GB of media, awesome!). Looking forward to watching recorded TV on the go via my PSP...

cheers for the replies - hope its not too long after the Oct 31 for UK...
I moded my PS3 to attach an external 750GB SATA II 3.5inch hdd only to find that the last few releases of Ps3 firmware don't support hdd larger than 500GB (not sure about the very latest from a week or so ago) so put a 320GB SATAII 3.5inch drive in instead

Would i be asking too much of the PC if i got the NovaT 500HD in the interim?
x64 3200 (single core)

NZtechfreak - can the PS3 access VOB media over the network?

Weird, mine takes a 750GB external drive just fine (forget which Fat formatting it needs though, its a Western Digital and just uses whichever the PS3 is happy with by default).

It can play VOB media, but it won't link VOBs together, it requires them to be unsplit (unless you're happy to keep starting the next one each time).

I played vobs on my PS3 for a while from Tversity and made sure I ripped them as one file. Worked okay. As for PlayTV it might not so quickly here because of our wierd audio format AAC-HE LATM which require another development thread for the developers.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

Word has it that Freeview have cleared some PVRs to be released later this year. No specifics, but hopefully the PlayTV is included.

I would link you to the source, but the internet right now is really, really slow (I think someone is mass downloading the internet here). But, it is somewhere on http://www.throng.co.nz
