tl;dr: Where is Freeview on Demand on a Sony Android TV?

I installed a Freeview UHF aerial yesterday. Have only been living here two years, so probably a little ahead of schedule but World Cup knock out rounds have prompted some action.

I've confirmed our TV (Sony Android KDL-50W800C) is on the list of compatible TVs but cannot for the life of me find where the Freeview on Demand button/app/option is. I assume I am missing something blindingly obvious.

Try pressing the Green button (from the four coloured buttons) on the remote?

Hmm, light on the set flickered so I know the keypress was received. Didn't do anything though.

Works for me on my Sony A1 which is also an Android TV.

Could also try, Bring up the Guide using the Guide button, then arrow left a couple of times to see if another menu appears. (older freeview app)

The TV does have an internet connection?

Left from the guide brings up a menu to see recorded shows and a couple of other things but not anything obvious.

Def internet connected. Typically all shows are delivered via that pipe.

Thats my last idea.

So my enter button doesn't do anything at all much less show a now/next window. I'm going to go out on a limb and say something screwy is going on. Will wait until after the world cup is done then try a reset or something.

Appreciate your help.

Have you got HbbTV turned off in the TV settings somewhere? FreeviewPlus will not work with it turned off.

We had this issue last night (we got the freeview upgrade a few days ago) on our 55X8500C.  Previously it was the red button to start on demand, but last night we had to change channel (which brings up the sony mini guide at the bottom of the screen) and press left, that show the option to launch ondemand.  We didnt get to test it though as our login details had been removed and we couldn't remember them, ended up casting it instead.

FYI - You need to create a new account for Freeview for the new On Demand app as it's separate from the original TVNZ,Three or Maori tv on Demand apps.

Thanks @trig42 - this was the key. From Sony UK:

You cannot use the HbbTV function for broadcast if you disagree with the BRAVIA Privacy Policy. To use this function, perform one of the procedures below.

Agree with the BRAVIA Privacy Policy

  1. Press the Home button on the remote control.
  2. Select Help (?) in the Settings category.
  3. Select Privacy setting in the Troubleshooting and system information category.
  4. Select Agree.

Set Interactive Application to On

  1. Press the Home button on the remote control.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Channel setup in the TV category.
  4. Select Digital setup.
  5. Select Interactive Application Setup.
  6. Select Interactive Application, then set it to On.

"Interactive application" was already on, but I can only guess I hadn't agreed to the Privacy Policy at some stage. Doing this still didn't work the first time, but a reboot (holding remote power button for 5 seconds) seems to have triggered it. After that, all @djtOtago's suggestions worked (down then left, or the green button).

Hi,

I have a kdl43w800c which the Freeview would load on in the past. When I loaded the latest Sony android os update for it a month ago the NZ Freeview apps all disappeared

Called Sony. First time they got me to do a factory reset. This was a waste of time

I called them back and they took my details and said they would get back to me. Another waste of time as they haven’t

Contacted TVNZ, they send me a link to their android install. But it won’t load as says it’s not compatible

So much for choosing a tv with a relative open os! :(

Like to know if anyone knows the answer.

C

Tried steps above but no joy

I’m having the same issue with a brand new Sony OLED TV with Android. All firmware updated, connected to Internet and antenna yet unable to access or even find FreeView On Demand. I’ve checked the Bravia privacy policy and confirmed the interactive app settings are on. Really weird as Freeview Live channels look great and all other online apps working. When I look at the EPG guide nothing is listed next to the green and red buttons at the bottom of the guide.

Any ideas to get Freeview On Demand working much appreciated as Dr Google doesn’t seem to have a solution and neither do Sony or Freeview on the Internet at least.

Thanks.

Hi. Success!!! I followed all of the advice above and then waited a little while after restarting the TV and Freeview on Demand is now working. Quite crazy that you have to access the mini guide that pops up when changing channels to activate Freeview on Demand but the option finally showed up and now works. Thanks all for your efforts earlier this year.

Whew! Glad it worked. I was reading my way down the thread thinking I was all out of ideas. Like you, I needed to trigger a full restart for the changes to take effect.

For me, the easiest way to get to on demand is from the TV screen (not the home screen for some reason) just press the green button.
