With the NBA season starting next week it seems that Duke has axed its NBA coverage.

It joins NFL and Bundesliga in terms of disappearing from the schedule.  Apparently MLS and AFL arent going to be renewed.

Both Formula E and WRC, having another year of contract, will be back in 2019 but I gonna guess these will go the same way.

With no audience watching there is no money to be made for TVNZ (or Sky wrt F1) - no money = no content renewal.  Irrespective of exclusivity or non-exclusivity of content, if the economics dont stack up then the viewer loses the content.

For sports of lower interest, the content provider will have to provide cheap, or not provide at all to an Aggregator.

Sounds fair to me, if they want to much, they get nothing or have to find a way to get the people interested in the Sport etc to pay with streaming options.

I like Duke for Sci Fi content so hope it stays.

I think it was pure speculation.  Personally I cant see Duke going anytime soon.  TVNZ needs to make use of the spectrum under the "use it or lose it rule".  And spectrum is valuable.  It'll be used for the current lowbrow cheap content and utilised for events like the CommGames etc if TVNZ renews the rights.

They also lost the Bundesliga too. I want them to start playing some NZ sport and actually invest in our local sports outside of rugby, like the NZ Football Premiership, NZ Basketball League and NZRL. There is plenty of sport in NZ even over the summer months, it would be a win win for both the sports and the broadcasts in terms of exposure.

TVNZ has a deal with Spark for FTA content, the NBA might have gone but they have more content coming.

Spark has secured the exclusive rights to broadcast the Heineken Champions Cup rugby for the next four years.

It adds to a growing list of sports competition rights for Spark including the English Premier League from next season, the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the 2021 Women's Rugby World Cup.

The Heineken Champions Cup is a pan-European professional club rugby competition, in which the top 20 clubs from the three professional domestic European leagues compete for the Champions Cup title. The competition begins in October and runs until the final in early May.

Spark's partner TVNZ will show two Heineken Champions Cup games a week free-to-air via TVNZ Duke on Saturday and Sunday mornings, from this weekend until Spark's sport platform launches which is scheduled for early next year.

Spark are set to reveal more content announcements in the coming weeks

Yeah, but its not just the NBA.  Its the NFL, MLS, Bundesliga, and AFL.  All trumpeted as the growing list of FTA sports - until the expiry of the 3 year contracts and then "goodbye".   Its not like its even content that is contested.  Its non-exclusive, its available and its just not watched.  No audience = no content.

And now we have a streamer adding a highly attractive Rugby comp.  Like the Top14 was.  Yeah, right.  At least Spark is not claiming the HCC is of Super15/18 quality like their former partner did with Top14.

Its the sport not many can identify with in NZ, it seems like all we do in NZ is prop up other popular international sports competitions. I like football especially the Bundesliga and MLS but I couldn't identify with any of the teams because I am not from there even though there are some kiwi players. If you want to capture a sport market you have to get people into tribalism and thats what NPC rugby had for a long time. It can be done with other sports in our country but the broadcasters and general public don't give it a chance to be exposed which again makes it harder for any athlete in NZ aspiring to be a professional outside Rugby and Netball. Until then we will continue to get live sport on Duke at weird kick-off times with teams no one can identify with. Adding more rugby isn't the answer, diversification is.
