Hi

I am running mediaportal RC2 on XP Pro SP2 with PDVD8 Ultra (v1830) H264 Codec using an HVR 2200. I have all the default settings in mediaporta and im using the default VRM9 renderer. I have NO other codecs installed on the system.

When i view TV1, TV2, TV3 and HD-Demo i get perfect picture.
When i view C4,TVNZ6,TVNZ7 i get sound but a garbled picture. The picture is mostly green with occasional bits of the actual TV footage coming through.

When i used Vista i didn't get this problem, all the channels were good, however i changed to XP because i couldn't get H.A. working in Vista.

What are the difference between TV1/2/3/HD-Demo 'vs' C4,TVNZ6/TVNZ7?

Does anyone know why i have this problem?

Any suggestions for a solution?

This is the type of picture i get with C4 (pic stollen from another thread)

I'm guessing it's a codec issue, however i really want to avoid adding additional programs or codecs to the system, as it's currently running so blazzingly fast

If I go into

Mediaportal configuration (Advanced Mode)
-> DirectShow Filter Control
-> PowerDVD 8 Decoder Settings
-> Turn OFF "Use hardware accleration"

Then i can view C4/TVNZ6/TVNZ7 with good picture
However CPU useage jumps to 60% in TV3 and it is no longer crystal smooth

Anyone have any solutions for me?

I tried fiddling with the options under VRM and also the deinterlacing settings, but that did not seem to help.

I'm assuming you have an ATI video card. (or an AMD 780G mobo)

This is the exact issue I had with my system.

First, getting H/A on XP with ATI cards seems to be somewhat hit'n miss. You'll actually have better luck with Vista if done right.

Basically to get it to work, you MUST have the latest PowerDVD 8 patch downloaded and installed from the Cyberlink site. Also make sure the option for H/A is enabled in PDVD8.
ATI Catalyst 8.7 should be installed.
In media portal (for vista) you need to have EVR selected as your video renderer, NOT VMR9.
This SHOULD with a bit of luck, get you good results accross the board.

Under XP, I dunno... You may get it working, you may not...

There's many threads around explaining this but basically the problem is poor ATi deinterlacing support for H.264 and hardware acceleration.

Channels C4,6,7 & 3 are all interlaced signals. Channel 3 may look like its working, but from my personal experience it eventually craps out like the others after a while.

The reason you had no problems under Vista, is because you werent using hardware acceleration. A handfull of people however, have managed to get it working with ATi cards, but no body is able to pin it down to one thing. I'd move back to my HD2400XT at the drop of a hat if I had the chance. Until ATi can sort this problem out, using an nVidia video card seems to be the only solution.

UPDATE: (I wrote this in another thread but thought i should update this one too)

ATI Catalyst Suite 8.7 (Display Driver ??8.51) + XP + 780G Mobo = Crash, Bluescreen.

ATI Catalyst Suite 8.8 Beta (Display Driver ??8.52) + XP + 780G Mobo = Can watch all channels with hardware acceleration, however there are occasional video glitches, and occasionally it gets stuck on a video glitch, and i have to timeshift fwd to fix it.

Best solution for XP so far (for me) is the ATI Display Driver on the gigabyte website (It's like version 8.457 or something like that)
This gives me super smooth stable TV1,2,3,HD-Demo (About 5-10% CPU useage). But garbled video on C4,TVNZ6+7

If I could use different codec settings for different channels then i could either disable H.A. for C4,TVNZ6+7 or just choose the FFDShow codec for these channels. The other option is i can still record of C4 etc, and i might be able to use MPC-HC to watch the files (altho i would have to save as non .ts as apparently MPC-HC doesn't like .ts files)

Shermanp: So do you have the 780G Mobo, are you using in vista32, what is it like, any problems?

If I use XP Pro SP2, ATI HD3200, Old Catalyst Drv from gigabyte website, PDVD8 Ultra 1830 then
TV3 doesnt crap out for me. Strange. There must be some other difference btwn 3 vs the other channels.

Nope, no 780G for me.
I'm using a HD 3650 card, but it suffered from the exact same issue.
It is working fine for me now though with the setup I mentioned previously.

I had problems with EVR hence using XP because EVR is not required for DXA. Although there is someone on here who apparently has vista32 + 780G Mobo + EVR + Mediaportal working.

I have a similar issue, although not as drastic - and I'd be interested to know what the difference is with C4/TVNZ6/TVNZ7.

I'm running Vista32, MediaPortal, PDVD8 codec in hardware acceleration mode, EVR.

All is sweet, actually more than sweet with TV1/TV2/TV3 and Freeview HD - the picture quality is stunning, especially on TV3 and the demo HD channel (obviously).

The other channels however are very jerky - trying to watch the olympic football last night was an exercise in frustration - no matter what config changes I tried the picture was jerky and motion blur was insane.

Can't get my head around why if TV3 and the demo HD run so well, why channels that aren't full HD (is TVNZ sports extra???) are causing such issues.

FYI CPU hits between 15 to 40% max so that isn't my problem afaik.

i had same experience. with hardware accleration enabled C4/TVNZ6+7/TVNZ-Sports don't work.
if you disable hardware acceleration or switch to a codec that doesn't support H.A. then the picture is ok.

What mobo / video card are you using?
What version of the ATI drivers are you using?
- To find this out right click on desktop, open catalyst control centre (advanced mode)
- Look under info centre -> graphics software -> Driver packaging version

The reason i'm asking is someone thought that using ATI CCC v8.7 solves this problem in Vista32

Catalyst 8.7 by itself did not work for me when i installed it. it was only when I updated PowerDVD8 with the latest patch from their website did I suddenly stop having problems (PDVD8 Ultra).

This is vista 32 EVR and Mediaportal 1.0 RC2 for me is my setup.

I'm having the same issue in Vista 32, MediaPortal, PDVD8 codec in hardware acceleration mode, EVR. TV1,2,3 mostly fine, the 576i channels very jerky. All channels running fine for me under XP. I'm using an nVidia 8600gt, unlike most who seem to be having these troubles with their ATI card.

After a bit of a battle I have beaten TV1,2,3 and finally C4, TV6, 7 etc. into submission. Just a post for your information on my settings in case any of you are struggling:

I have a Windows XP, Mediaportal RC2 with latest SVN (mediaportal-svn-09-06-2008--11-16-Rev20143.rar). Hardware is a 3Ghz P4, 2 Gb DDR and a couple of sata drives and one ata for recording. I use one of the sata drives for timeshifting. Graphics is on a Sapphire HD3850 AGP and TV card is Nova-T-500

My main problem was that using the Cyberlink Powercinema h.264 decoder (it came free with my Nova card) in MP I could only receive TV1,2 and 3. C4 would completely lock up the machine.
However, if I used CoreAVC (which I bought) I could watch C4 no problem but the machine really struggled with TV1-3. This seemed to be due to overloading the processor (bouncing off 100% usage). Basically, I needed the Cyberlink decoder to use the hardware acceleration on the graphics card but there seemed to be a problem with the interlaced modes that C4 uses.

So as a last ditch attempt to get things going, I downloaded the free trial version of PowerDVD 8 and told MP to use that h.264 decoder instead. And magic, it all now works fine!

I'm not sure if I am going to have to buy the decoder in 30 days (end of the free trial) but hopefully not as I've not even opened PowerDVD and don't intend to use it. If I do need to shell out $50 then its cheaper than the other option of new motherboard, processor and graphics card!

Other settings are:

MPEG2 decoder: Cyberlink video /SP decoder (PDVD8)
H.264 decoder: Cyberlink H.264/AVC decoder(PDVD8)
Audio decoder: bitcontrol mpeg2 audio decoder
LATM: monogram
Audio renderer: default directsound device
Deinterlace mode: bob

All the options for VMR9 selected and gaussian quad filtering.
If you need any more specs, reply to this thread and I'll do my best to help.
