HandBrake snapshot 3 now supports Freeview transcoding to AVI,MP4,MKV including AC3 pass through for TV3.

Available for Mac, Windows and Linux including GUI for all three (including Linux).
Also note that this version of HB also will transcode from anything that ffmpeg supports to AVI,MP4,MKV, e.g. DV, AVI, MKV, FLV, MP4

I have EyeTV kicking off the encoding for me using AppleScript using HandBrake. These are the settings I use for various channels (and have been doing for months, they work well for me), note that I encode some shows differently to others for various reasons, or setup a delay so that it doesn't interfere with encoding other shows:

Got a bug for you already, i would submit it on the handbrake forum but im a bit lazy sorry.

Encoded the TV1 sample available from the samples thread at the top of this page, and it encoded however it plays at half the speed. Playing at double speed in media player classic seems to make it play normally.

Heres the settings i used:

Some interesting settings there:
"-f m4v --detelecine -e x264 -S 100 -2 -T -a 1 -E faac -B 160,160 -R 48,48 -6 stereo -D 1"
The main worry is that you have detelecine enabled, which is for NTSC programs, try removing that.
You can also remove the extra audio bitrate and samplerates given that you've only asked for one audio input track.
Another thing you will want to do is specify the output frame rate as 25fps rather than leaving it at 50fps (-r 25). I must admit to having never tried leaving at 50fps since my player won't do 720p50, I'll give it a try though, thanks.

Well detelecine was ticked by default for some reason in my old preset, i dont even recall seeing it there before. Odd, put that down as a PEBKAC error then, i also forgot that my default settings (for DVD) also had the 2nd audio track for AC3 audio. I'll try again based on the 'normal' preset.
I left FPS same as source, but i suppose 25fps could cut the file size in half.

edit:Redid TV1 with 25fps came out perfect.

edit2:Did a TV3 file with the following, fast deinterlace, and its playing in slow motion again:

Note that fast deinterlace drops every other line, slower or slow is better, and is now multithreaded and so isn't as slow. The decomb option is pretty nifty as well, since it detects interlacing and removes it when detected. So on static images it doesn't bother deinterlacing, it is also multithreaded, but the checking imposes a bit of a slow down, so I use deinterlace=slower for TV3.

I just tried at 50fps for a TV1 show, worked fine for an MP4/H264 playing in Quicktime, apart from some minor lip sync issues that I get at the moment, which I dial out on my amp. I need to figure out why that crept in.

Could you try in a different player - Windows Media Player probably isn't the best one to use.
VLC or Quicktime would be good.

Im not using WMP, im using Media Player Classic Home Cinema using Cyberlink PDVD8 h.264 decoder (DXVA otherwise playback isnt smooth).

Just did TV3 with these options, and i get a nice green picture, using both the MPC Video decoder and the Cyberlink h264 decoder, whether DXVA is on or not. At least audio is the right speed now. Checked with latest VLC and its green there too.

I've tried VLC 0.9.2, MPC 6.4.9.0, WMP 11, and VirtualDub using a TV 3 stream with slower/slow de-interlacing, but they won't play (slower is a green screen for instance)

This is all very strange since it works fine for me, I'm trying using eXDees settings right now to try to reproduce.
Make sure that the streams are for more than 30seconds worth, else you encounter issues.

Those who have downloaded this, it might be of help if you post your results with deinterlacing the interlaced channels (eg tv3). One person on another forum got this:
De-interlacing on TV3 and viewing with VLC 0.9.2, MPC 6.4.9.0, WMP 11, and VirtualDub
Slower: green video (just green picture)
Slow: only first frame of video
Fast: video plays as normal, but really far from ideal

De-combing
Still interlaced

Well had high hopes reading this post. But when I fed in a TV3 capture it crashed immediately with a stack overflow! I suspect all the programs work okay but as soon as your data is bad (missing bits in the DVB-T transmission stream), they crap out. I just picked up another 500G drive and have decided rather than bother with all this compression, just get more HD space! The only concession I will make is to remove the ads before I store the video file on the server.
