I've just performed a software update on my Sony Bravia KDL-40V4000, (now version C.J-IB-CL-C.X.HU-A.C.Y.T) and the only difference I can find is there's a new channel, ChineseTV8. Doesn't look like it will be of interest to me, but may be to others.
Cheers,Joseph.

Any idea how you force this software update? 32" W still hasn't got it.

No, sorry, mine just prompted when I turned it off. The update takes around 5 minutes, was the first time I've done it, was a bit disconcerting.

I just did a scan in gbpvr and picked it up. Comes from World TV who provide 10 Asian channels on Sky. Alas, the PQ is terrible from what I saw - looks they are originating from VHS tape so it makes transmitting in HD a bit of a waste!

CCTV8 is only transmitted in SD not HD, it arrives here as SD mpeg2 off Chinasat6B on 3880H in a mux with 6 or so other channels, so its only distribution grade (ie for final delivery to home via one decode process). Once it decoded then recoded as mpeg4 then things are naturally going to look a bit off.

I think its a welcome addition to FreeView|HD, would be better if for a small period each day there was say a news journal type program in english to broadend its appeal.

Pity it's being show in "Fatovision" and not 4x3.  They need to fix the aspect ration..

That explains the poor PQ. Agree it's a welcome addition. Apparently it has been available over UHF in the Auckland area for a while. As for English language news, I seem to recall a while ago that TCL broadcast an English language Chinese channel for a while for free.  Don't see it now so wonder what happened to that?

Is this exactly the same content as being broadcast on Analog UHF in Auckland (799.25 MHz)?  Or is it a mixture of content from different channels like Stratos?  And is it on Sky?

The channel is CTV8 which is a mix of channels from various sources. It isn't CCTV8.

The transmission is currently identical to the Auckland UHF channel, with the obvious issue of the 4:3 content being flagged as 16:9
