Folks, I've received this information from Freeview today:

Non-approved digital terrestrial receivers – technical fault

Freeview, the free-to-air digital television and radio platform, wishes to advise the owners of non-approved digital terrestrial receivers that they may experience a technical fault with their receiver which is beyond Freeview’s control.

At 5pm on Wednesday Freeview broadcasters switched on the new MyFreeview|HD record capable Electronic Programme Guide (or Freeview EPG). Prior to that extensive testing of all Freeview|HD approved digital terrestrial receivers was conducted.

Unfortunately, owners of some non-approved digital terrestrial receivers are experiencing a ‘green flash’ on TV3. This is a fault with the receiver and not the broadcast signal.

Freeview and TV3 are helping to diagnose the problem but fixing the issue rests with the importer of those receivers.
We advise owners of these receivers to contact the person they purchased it from to obtain a fix.

Hmm.  Change the standard some way and blame everyone else for the problems..

Fair enough, they shouldn't have to change their stuff to cater for non-approved boxes.  Still, it's good that they are helping diagnose the problem (or so they say).  I'm glad I don't watch too much of TV3 though...

Edit: unless they are now operating outside of the standard, but I assumed they aren't...

Afraid not.

The problem is that some of the STB's have only implemented the portion of the standard required to support transmissions until now. The new EPG code is still within the spec, just use a program like rb-download to pull the MHEG-5 code if you want to check.

Which is fair enough. Why waste time developing to the spec, when those features might never be used.  Except then you get the current situation where now they're behind the 8-ball.  As long as they develop a fix and fast, no hassles.  Until next time? ;)

Don't know if this is related but last week my Powercinema EPG stopped working for everything except TV3 and then at the weekend TV3 stopped returning any program info as well. Just get dots and no info. Thought it was something corrupt in PowerCinema so reinstalled to no avail. Turns out a collegue has the same symptoms. Any answers?

The DVB EPG format has been changed slightly for the upcoming PVR's.

Since none of the approved boxes use the DVB EPG (they all use the 8 day MHEG5 EPG) it's only an issue if you are using a PC application such as PowerCinema. Those of us who run Media Portal or GB-PVR all use XML EPG's to deliver the whole 8 days.
