Hey folks!

For the last few months, i've been running with MySkyHdi, 2 boxes with a multiroom setup, with all channels except rugby channel... but a combination of poor service from Sky, (6 seperate engineer visits in 2 months!) and getting messed around with pricing etc (was origanally quoted $115 all in for the above, it ended up being nearer $160..) I decided to leave them !

Long and the short of it, I barely watch TV, and the stuff the wife watches, is either on terrestrial, or I download off the net...

I brought 2 TV's across with me from the UK, 1 x 47" 1080p LCD, and a 32"1080i LCD. both of which have analogue tuners..

The 32" Acer picks up standard channels fine, with a bit of "fuzziness" on TV2..
The 47" gets the picture fine, but plays no sound at all, from any channel....

At this point, I thought I know, I'll go out and get a freeview hard drive recorder box, as that's what we had over in the UK, and having a small child, being able to hit pause and record / watch programs whenever you are fantastic features....

After a little digging on the internet, I discovered that I can infact get HD on Freeview, but not recording (yet)... so off I pop to Dick Smith's to pick up one of their home brand HD boxes...

I get the box home, plug it in... interface comes up fine through hdmi etc... but the box receives no signal at all from the aeriel.. I thought i'd got a dud box.. so, got it swapped, and got exactly the same....

From what I can tell, this could be because I've got a UHF aeriel on the roof, and not a VHF ?, (i'm sure there are both up there, but where the hell the cables go is a different matter (rented house))

So, for now, I took back the HD Freeview box, and got a Satellite one so we can at least watch TV...

I guess what I'd like a bit of advice on is;

Is there a way (without using a media pc) to have a hard drive recorder HD Freeview box? (i.e. imported from UK etc ?)
Am I down the right path with the UHF / VHF aeriel ?
Should I be

Using the Sat freeview box at the moment, it's like i've gone back to the early 90's with the first Sky box i had in the uk :), nostalgic, but ugly ! :)

The reason your UK TV doesn't work is because of the channel spacing. Some TV's have tuners capable of working with the different standards but most don't.

As for a Freeview PVR the answer is no. A UK model won't work because it uses MPEG2 whereas NZ are using MPEG4/H.264 for our Freeview|HD broadcasts. The first official box should be hitting the market around the 1st December.

Freeview HD is UHF and is only available in 9 cities so far. The first HD PVR is on the way but it is a requirement of Freeview that on 'approved' decoders the recorded HD content is protected by HDCP so you can not move it off the PVR.

Don't buy a box from the UK because it may not support MPEG4 which is what we use here for HD. The satellite system is MPEG2 and is standard definition only.

I am the same as you, I have Sky but only really watch the 'free to air' stuff.

So, does it sound like the aeriel i've got hooked up is VHF then ? (i.e. able to get a signal for ordinary TV, but not freeview ?) (Ellerslie in Auckland)

Going to need to get a UHF aeriel sorted in that case then... bugger.. anyone recommend any good installation folk in the Auckland area ?

Cheers

Some standard TV channels (like Prime I think) are UHF. Most houses (like mine) have two antennas (UHF and VHF) with a splitter box. Not sure of a good antenna installer in your area.

BTW - Prime is not transmitted on Freeview.
