MEDIAWORKS TV TO LAUNCH +1 CHANNEL ON FREEVIEW

MediaWorks TV is to launch its first Freeview exclusive channel in March 2009. The format will be a +1
channel, providing all of TV3's content on a one-hour delayed basis.

When the +1 service was launched on the Freeview platform in the UK, the channels proved among the
most popular, as they give viewers the opportunity to see top rating programming at an alternative time,
rather than programming aimed strictly at a niche audience.

With the launch of +1, Freeview viewers will have an option as to when they do their viewing.  3 NEWS will
be available at 7pm well as at its normal time of 6pm on TV3.  Daytime serial drama watchers who can􏰀t
watch Home and Away at 5:30pm now have the option of watching it at 6:30pm on +1.

"In the UK, tuning to the +1 channel averages 38% of the tuning to the main channel on the same platform
and we would expect no difference in New Zealand," comments Rick Friesen, Director of Special Projects.
"As the advertising content will remain the same on +1 as on the TV3, advertisers will have an extra
opportunity for exposure of their products and services."

+1 will be available on Freeview Channel 8 from Monday, 30 March, 2009.

Sadly not the sort of new channel announcement I was hoping for from Mediaworks, and probably says a lot for how large our commercial TV marketplace is. Just hope they don't use up the rest of their capacity doing the same with C4.

Yes, not as interesting as I hoped it would be.
I thought that they might replay some of their feature TV Shows and sports programmes on that new channel, like the V8 Supercars and International shows like 24, heroes and Bones.

It's a shame they they are launching a channel like this simply because they are under obligation to launch another Freeview channel rather than offering something with new content.

I'd love to see far more V8 Supercars programming to TV3, Sports Extra was fantastic when TVNZ had the rights. Maybe TV3 should just do a deal with TVNZ so they can use the channel when needed to run live coverage all weekend rather than it sitting there with a "nothing here move along" message on it 99% of the time.

Yeah i'm a bit disappointed too since it's almost useless for those who are using a PVR of sorts, providing you've set your recordings correctly.

That would be great. Instead of having to wait up till 10:30 at night for Race 3 they could have the V8s live on their 2nd Channel, or even a combined Sports Channel with TVNZ and mediaworks would work well.

I think this is great a big thumbs up.

News at 7:00 pm suits me.  I like this idea plus it will stop the prime time clashing on one channel verses the other.  (I dont have sky nor a media recorder) apart from the old vhs machine which is just taking up space.

complete waste of time.
With the PVRs coming out very soon (few weeks) we the consumer will be able to choose exactly when we want to our program e.g start watching the news at 6:32pm when you get home from work.

Seems as bad as sky movies 2 IMO, i'd rather have sky movie max back which had its own playlist
why not create a channel like tvnz 6 with its own playlist? (not with the tons of repeats)

Bit dissapointing. Seems a waste of digital bandwidth especially with PRVs.

Making C4 better quality would have been much better.

I'm +1 on the waste of time, with all the PVR's coming out

Or instead of an extra channel why not use the extra bandwidth to make the existing TV3 channel HD so those of us who are unable to get the UHF HD version can at least get something in HD??
Or would the MPEG4 HD bandwidth be more than the two MPEG2 SD channels?

TV3 did use C4 for additional V8 coverage later in the season but it's still not the same as a continuous live feed all weekend.

Sounds like you mean satellite, which there are no plans to go HD on since no one would be able to receive it except HTPC owners and those who have imported HD receivers, which is a tiny tiny minority.

Regarding V8's - i imagine they would suspend the +1 coverage when there's an event like this on and instead run a constant feed. At least that would be the smart thing to do.

Is this new +1 channel only going to be on DVB-T?

I dont imagine they would - too disruptive to the people that come to depend on +1 for what it is.

Not overly exciting - but an okay concept.

No one would mind this if there were already twice as many channels, but this is a big percentage of the current programming to simply be repeated.

It will be useful to me. I dont always get to PVR everything I want.
