It's a shame that Prime has to get bumped further down the channel list, while timeshifted channels like TVNZ2 +1 (channel 7 ) and Bravo +1 (channel 9) are in low spots.

In an ideal world, 1-10 should be distinct general entertainment networks (not shopping channels, not religious channels, not timeshifted channels).

11-20 could be a mix of timeshifted channels (11 for TVNZ 1 +1, 12 for TVNZ 2+1 , 13 for Three+1, 14 for Bravo +1 etc) and other channels slotted in where there's no +1 channel... or better still just put the timeshifted channels to 101, 102, 103 etc so the whole range of channels 1-20 is free from them.

I've custom-sorted my Freeview channels like that, and it makes things far easier to channel-surf.

I've done that somewhat with my Panasonic TV and VCR by shuffling the channels.

I wonder why Freeview allows the +1 channels to be in amongst "live" channels - occupying those high spots on the list?

I suspect part of the problem may be a legacy issue from when TVNZ had 6 and 7 as distinct channels (I miss TVNZ6 & TVNZ7), and they just held on to those spots?

I don't suppose any has any idea of what these new channels might be? The OP indicates new channels are coming.

At what point will they kill the +1s since its all on demand now anyway?

Yes, and Prime+1 is being broadcast by Sky as DVB-S mpeg2 to be compatible with Freeeview sat service (I'm assume it is not duplicated on Freeview sat) and looks absolutely vulgar. They would need to pay people to watch it. And I would assume that this is why it's not on terrestrial as it's unfit for the platform.

Should they be talking about retiring the mpeg 2 SD service about now? Its run its time and really looks like a 1990s era VCD at times.

DVB-S mpeg2 is being kept in service for Freeview even for the new satellite to launch next year. Defies belief.

Wow, its not like the hardware to do h264 is even expensive now, but again, that is out of date so they would be foolish to deploy that as its replacement.

Interesting widescreen resolution - not using using 1024x576 like other broadcasters

  • Video resolution: 960x540

As soon as they can collectively do a deal to sell the spectrum to cellular operators or someone else.

Then anyone without good broadband will be forced onto satellite.

And what's wrong with that? Satellite gives 100% coverage of the country though at the moment mostly only SD?
