"hi, what is the ethernet port used for on this DSE freeview receiver?"

"It's used so you can hook it up to your network" The sales guy replies

"Oh so it shows up as a device on your network?" the man ask

"No you can use it to view freeview on your computer" says the sales guy

"...using the network port?"

"yes"

"...!?"

And then the man walks out.

Well, it doesn't surprise me.  Had similar experiences too.

I don't blame the sales people, I blame DSE's management, not providing adequate product training.

Hey another Whangarei -ite Cool!
I would prefer to have a salesperson tell me they don't know rather than make something up/lie.

I guess so, but its usually funnier if they try to make out that they know stuff.  Occassionally I go in there just to test them (yes, I have no life) and laugh at their stupidity.

I agree, it is clearly obvious nothing has changed in the past 4 or so years since I escaped as there has been no improvement. No wonder their salespeople and store management turnover rate is so horrendous.

About 4yrs ago was in DSE Manchester St in ChCh and overheard keen young sales guy advising customer on buying an UHF aerial to pick up local station CTV and Trackside. Customer said he lved at Darfield and immediately keen young sales guy grabbed a Band 1 VHF aerial (normally used for TV1 on Ch3 in ChCh) and said this is what you need. It's a wider aerial for country reception. Saw manager standing nearby so told him what I overheard. To give the manager his due he immediately intervened and sorted put the right UHF aerial. But I wonder how many other people this young idiot had already sold a VHF aerial to for receiving UHF stations.

LOL - I just remembered something

Back in 2003 I went to DSE Riccarton as I was after a crossover Ethernet cable so I could sync files between two machines. I had just started Computer Science at Polytech and I was learning about networking stuff - I was pretty confident that what I needed for the job was a crossover cable. Anyway I was literally about to grab a crossover cable from the shelf when a salesperson walks up to me and goes "Nah you need the other one".

Ok, cool - so I pay for it and go home.

2 days go by - fiddling around with the cable and network settings... Man, this cable isn't working, aye? Probably just something I'm doing wrong.

So I called over my friend who knew a lot about networking.  What I had purchased was a regular CAT 5 cable...!

Hmmm.......yes. Whenever I need an item from DSE I first search their website, then record their stock number for the item. Then I can go and find exactly what I want, and only need to ask for guidance as to where it is shelved. I thus avoid incorrect info from sales staff!

That is exactly what I do as well.  The only time I need a salesman is to haggle for a good price and find where the item is located.

I get annoyed when they walk up and say "Is everything alright there sir?". I just respond with "Yep", and turn around and walk in the other direction.

That's my favourite lunchtime sport - haha, I could almost write a book - favourite quote from a couple years ago, "HDMI port, no you won't need that as it is only backed by one or two brands -  only component inputs will be universally supported in the future"

I try to avoid DSE like the plague. I'll usually go-out-of-my-way to go elsewhere.

I feel sorry for those less tech literate who require the assistance of sales staff in these types of stores. It must be one hell of a frustrating experience when advice they've given doesn't work, or worse yet, goes horribly wrong. And yes, I agree that it's managements fault.

One thing I've liked about the JB stores (Auckland and Albany at least). Having staff specialise in an area at least makes their advice a little more informative. No, doesn't make them perfect and there's probably still dildos working in those stores, but they're a sight better than DSE.

It reminds me when I was at uni and my mate Andrew and myself were sitting outside during a break. Andrew had a dead harddrive and he was shaking it for no other reason that to hear the clicking sound in the drive (some sort of internal failure). Then a 1st year student came up to ask what he was doing. Andrew, completely straightfaced said 'I'm compressing data', to which the 1st year student reply wideeyed 'Really?'. Lets just say I couldn't stop crying with laughter for several minutes. I wonder if the 1st year student is working in a DSE store now...

Haha i work at dse. I don't think ive mislead anyone, though you do get customers who are slightly confused, twice i've been asked where we keep the wireless wires in the last month.
But yeah most of what you're saying is right and applies to most appliance/retail stores.
