I have a working caravan setup that receives Freeview just fine, but the receiver is an unknown brand and I suspect pretty old, the software looks pretty clunky.
As well as watching Freeview I would also like to be able to watch my own media files stored on a usb drive. My existing one cant do that.

Any suggestions on a good but cheap box that would suit? I dont need recording abilities, just playback.

The TV screen itself doesn't have any USB ports that support playing media from a USB stick?

No, it's just a dumb tv.

Your best place to look would be aliexpress as there are a tonne of dvb-s boxes on there. The local ones will be either those marked up considerably by importers, or else ones that are "freeview approved" and therefore gimped for features like 30s skip and other things that they dont think their customers would appreciate having the users able to do.

I use a DishTV A2 in my caravan. It has a HD in it for recording from Freeview which I find useful. It runs GoogleTV so apps like Kodi should work for media playback. (I use Plex, but the media isn't local)
