Im hoping someone may be able to offer some advice.
I bought a Freeview Terrestial STB. Strangely it works fine some of the time using my Rabbit ears! However, this craps out often, i realise i need to get a UHF Aerial. I got a little Draco thing but it works worse than the Rabbit ears (as in nothing is picked up by it, gutted).

I'm renting so dont want to/cant put an aerial up on the roof (thus the money i wasted on the Draco). I live on the 2nd story of a 4 story building and have a big deck. Thought i could put an aerial on the deck instead of having to try and gain roof access etc. Oh, i live in Mt Cook, Wellington.

There is a big tree at the end of the deck which blocks my view of the transmitter tower.

Will i be able to wonder down to Dick Smith or somewhere and buy the stuff i need to put one up on the deck myself and it work? If so, what are all the bits and pieces i need? How much is it going to cost me? Quite keen to learn how to put one up, but can't find anythign online giving advice on the components etc.

Any help would be amazing!

A cheap hills brand one will set you back around $75 plus the mast at around $20 i think. not sure what the cable will cost but once it has the two ends on it just screw them in at each end.

If you have line of sight to Kaukau with only a tree in the way, I'm surprised the Draco didn't work.  Although I'm not familiar with that particular aerial.

I live in an apartment building in the CBD, and there are at least two buildings between me and Kaukau.  I could get pretty good reception with amplified rabbit's ears (I borrowed them off my father, apparently they were just cheap ones from a supermarket).

Does your decoder have a mode where it shows you the signal strength for particular frequencies?  I found that useful when aligning the aerial.  You can look up Kaukau on this list of transmitter sites to make sure you're trying to find the right frequency.
