Hi, I live in whangaparaoa, and have just purchased a dse dvb-t box. I was told by a few people that signal is patchy in my area, but I still wanted to give it a go. Freeview website says I am likely to get signal with high aerial.

I have connected the box, but have had no luck in scanning channels.

When I go into the manual scan section, when selecting 29,33,45 I get something like 90-100% signal 70-90% quality, but this only lasts for 3-5seconds, then goes to 0% for both for a second or so.

I wondered if this was due to my masthead amp overloading the box. I dnt have an attenuator, so I put the signal thru a 2 way and 8 way splitter, to try and drop the strength. This brought down the values when it was showing signal, particularly the quality, but, still bounced back and forth from 0%.

I then turned down the gain adjustment on my ellis masthead amp, which also had little effect.
My aerial is a 91 el yagi, only a year old, rg6 throughout. Prime is watchable, but snowy, trackside is better, maori a little worse.

Has anyone experienced this problem before, and have any advice, or should I give up and take the box back for a sat one?

Thanks,
Brett

Hi, yes this often happens on bad non line of sight paths especially if you have changing propagation conditions in the way (large line of heavly foliaged trees that in the current weather are moving alot), I have observed  a few such reception sites and if you look at the spectrum of the mux you can see large broad holes of attenuated carriers that moves continually across the mux in sympathy with the wind and trees.

To try and sort such situations I have attempted with limited success to use a broadside array antenna, however to be quite honest if you want reliable reception you may be well advised to go sat as after extensive playing about with such reception situations I have sometimes managed to get reasonably reliable results, that go bad the next day and come back to good another, not a workable solution in my book.

Thanks for your expertise. I tried again this arvo, and it managed to find scan in the tvnz channels, first time, but now I get a flashing no signal. The only thing for me is, that I am not close to trees that are impeding the path, and it is also been not windy, and the flashing is at a constant rate. You dont think that this could be due to a fault in the box, or interferance from masthead amp etc.

Hi, without going through the hoops on the ground in your site I cannot really help but the Zinwell/DSE boxs in my experience are not deaf, infact quite good in this respect, not to say you dont have a faulty unit.

Cheers

Are those channels (29,33,45) the right ones for you? That is the Waitakare site you are pointing at? - your aerial is horizontal "-" ?

This site has a list http://www.freeviewshop.co.nz/digital-terrestrial-i-8.html (you have probably seen it already though). Do you get anything from the sky tower? (Vertical 28,32,40) ie Aerial like "|". You might have to check the aerial polarity.....

PS I had an "ET" (shudder) and bought a Zinwell (Same as your DSE box). Very happy with it.
