I noticed yesterday afternoon that TVNZ Sport Extra no longer had a signal on DVB-S. I gave TVNZ a call this morning and they confirmed that it has been removed indefinitely from the DVB-S service and will only be available on DVB-T.

A bit disappointing, but not suprising seeing as they are having capacity problems since introducing the regional streams for TV One.

well that sucks... I dont have freeview anymore cos we moved and now this house doesnt have a sattelite, but the TVNZ sport Extra was the initial reason I got Freeview... Back before TV3 got the V8 Supercars coverage.

Freeview issued an official release yesterday. TVNZ have decided to take it off DTH immediately and it will cease on DTT at some point in July.

well that's stupid, they waste bandwidth on 5 (??) versions of TV One, but yet they can't show on TVNZ Sport Extra on DVB-S. Just dumb.

It doesn't seem like a bandwidth issue as they are taking it off DTT too.

Maybe they are making room for DD? (on DTT that is?)

It is likely that the Sky transmission of TV One in SD will cease in the next couple of weeks.

The Sports Extra channel has been a thorn in TVNZ's side since the launch of Freeview. They don't have the resources or funding to make full use of it. It was originally a temporary channel for the V8s that was handy for the Olympics but they really don't need it now, hence it is going away.

Their DTT multiplex has more than enough bandwidth for 5.1 audio, they just need to finish upgrading their broadcast playout gear.

What they should to is talk to mediaworks and do a joint Sport channel sharing the costs.

I just can't get my head around this, but everyway I look at it requires 5 times the bandwidth of just one channel.  How the h3ll can you get a good quality picture out of this?!  Someone enlighten me, say it aint so, but what a complete ballsup and waste of the limited bandwidth available via Satellite.

Same response as to quote above!

Digital TV has it's own reception equivalent problems if the bandwidth is too small.  At times you would almost be better off watching the older Analogue TV if you had a good clean signal originally.  (though in the 4:3 aspect ratio which was the major issue for me).

I was told that it may appear again from time to time, such as for the 2010 Commonwealth games.

Sorry should have added a Undecided but my original post was via the quick reply box.

I think that is why they are getting rid of the sports channel. So that they can do something about the appalling state of TV1 and 2.

On Sky's platform?

Sky have their own transmission of TV One on Optus D1 in addition to TVNZ's four regional feeds.
