My Denon AVR has started having trouble decoding TV3's 5.1 freeview sound. Everything is fine when TV3 transmit full HD/5.1 source material. But, when the source is not 5.1 (advertisment breaks and most material) the result is silence. Switching to the 2ch AAC sound channel produces normal results but it is incovenient to be swtching back and forth. Strangely the Denon displays the didgital source as 6.1 not 5.1. I'n not sure when this started happening except that it is within the last month. Has TV3 changed their sound format in some way?

Any help appreciated.

Steve

What are you sending the signal from? STB, Media centre? PVR?

FYI TV3's AC3 feed is fulltime 5.1 if the audio feed is only 2ch stereo it's still broadcast within a 5.1 wrapper.

As Nety asked, what are you using as your source?

Thanks for help.

The source is a Sony Bravia integrated tuner - 46W4000 model. The optical output is set to "Auto" mode. If it is set to PCM you always get 2ch and there is no issue, but obviously no 5.1 either.

Th strange thing is that the optical input shows as a 6.1 (not 5.1) source on the AVR front panel (FL,FR,C,LFE,SR, SL + SB). I'm pretty sure it previously showed as 5.1.  On reading the AVR manual it doesn't look as though it can take a 6.1 source down to 5.1 which would explain what is happening as I only have the 5 speakers+LFE.

But, it used to work. I can't see what has changed.

I have the V model. I just switched it over during a ad break and it was fine. Detected as Dolby digital and output though the AVR.
Have you made sure that the TV is set to accept software updates over the air?

Many thanks for your help. I have found the problem and it now works fine. It was pretty simple in the end and I don't want to admit in public what I puzzled over for more than a week! :-) Steve
