Hi all,

Hey quick check, do all TV's with freeview HD built in output surround sound from TV3 now?
I remember for a while the Samsungs I think it was didn't do this?

Also, can anyone point out a deal for a 42"+ full HD TV with freeview HD built in leading up to Easter please? Feel free to note anything you see in here please.

I'm looking to buy this weekend hopefully.

Ill say have a look at Sony or Samsung for LCD or Panasonic for plasma. I think most of these tv's will have digital audio output but your going to have check. My last gen sony V series does so ild say all the newer models outputs DD.

Don't go near a Samsung if you want AC3 out. It's hit or miss depending on the model as to whether you'll get the ability to switch between AAC/AC3.

If there is a Samsung model you like get the shop to show you it working and see if you can switch between AAC/AC3 in the menu while on TV3. If you can ensure that you will be able to return the TV if the set you get doesn't have that same firmware version and limits this functionality.

Samsung's whole attitude towards this issue really is terrible, there is nobody at Samsung NZ or Radiola who really cares about this issue or will comment.

Cheers sbiddle, knew one of them was a pain.

Anyone know of any issues with the LG plasmas? -apart from the black colour tint we all seem to be able to see. AC3/ DD output okay on the LG's?

I just got a reply from Samsung re this issue on our 22" TV:
"Thank you for your enquiry, No this unit does not support thataudio stream."

Do all FV|HD certified IDTVs not have to support AC3? The Ask FV thread is now locked.

The problem is they don't even know themselves. There are example out there of Series 6 and Series 7 TV's where the answer to that quesion depends entirely on where and when you purchased the TV as different firmware versions for the exact same TV deliver different functionality. On some TV sees the AAC and AC3 signal but defaults to the AAC with no way to change this, on others the audio button allows switching between AAC and AC3.

As for a requirement to support AC3 the key thing here that using the example above of Series6 and Series7 models the TV's themselves to support AC3. It's the firmware blockyou from switching to the AC3 stream. Another user on here (Psycik) has a Series 6 Samsung that doesn't allow switching to AC3 yet on several occasions lately there has been an outage of the AAC signal here in Wellington on TV3 and his TV automatically switches to AC3 on TV3.

Hmm... Interesting. Thanks for that. I was sure that when I first set the TV up that originally it found the AC3 stream. Now it is stuck on HE-AAC stream and I am told my TV doesn't support AC3. We are only using a cheap indoor antenna, so I presumed it was just a reception issue.

You probably weren't imagining things!

I spent a lot of time trying to follow this issue up after reviewing two Samsung TV's on here that had this issue. After many phonecalls and email I just gave up trying to deal with Samsung and Radiola. They're selling a crippled product and to be honest don't seem to give a damn.
