I want to mount a spare sky dish i have for free view. I need some advice

1: for the time and hassel should i just pay sombody to do it. EG if its only an extra $100 or so may as well get them to do it?

2: Wich connector ends are best to use eg. screw on type or clamp type.

3: Do i have to match the ohms of the coax cable with the ohms of my connectors and satelite? eg, satalite says 60ohms i know you can get a few differnt grade cables does it mater which cable i use?

4: do the satalite recivers care about ohms?

5: I want to split the cable in the roof so i can run acable to the lounge and the bedroom any thing speacial i need to know?

6: any other tips you may have. oh yea i do i have access to a sat finder so thats not a biggy

thanks guys

Do you have a sky dish already set up (I notice that you said spare sky dish...)?

If so, you can split the cable coming off that for much less hassle than adding another dish.

Other than that - yeah, hire a pro - it has to be pointed right.

The dish is not mounted yet. As far as i can see the mounting and positning is the easy part, my friend managed to do it with out a sat finder took him a while though lol.

its the ends and the bits in between im not so sure about

You should use RG6 Cable.

You will need F-Connectors for RG6 (and a crimping tool) - the screw on F-Connectors aren't as good, especially outside.

To Split the cable, you will need a splitter with LNB passthrough - Jaycar have them, not too expensive.

If you have a sat finder, and are comfortable mounting the dish, have a crack yourself.

I wrote big reply to you earlier but it timed out and I lost it all.
However, condensed version is:

go to www.dishpointer.com, put in your address in NZ and select optus d1.
That will give you a very detailed idea of where it needs to go and what angle etc.

Hopefully the lnb is already on the arm if it's an ex sky dish, that will give you the skew right away too.

Anyway, it's important to know where it's heading in advance of installing.  This avoids any probs with the install getting in the way of the adjustments which can happen if you're unlucky or don't think it through.

The connection is easy if you are only going to one device as there are no splitters.  Ensure you get SkyTV approved cable, as this is the easiest way for people new to this to get decent RG6 cable.

Screw on F connectors will get you up and running initially, but you will need to put correct crimp f connectors on eventually for sure.  When you set it up initially just run direct cable, no splitters etc, even if you are going to more than one device eventually and have splitters etc.

You can do it yourself, but it's all about prep work initially.  Get the receiver tuning specs all sorted etc, make sure you know what you're doing on that side.  Get the tools all ready.  It's easier if you take a lead and a portable tv/dvd player etc even out close by so you can see the results on the screen right there with you if you don't have a sat finder.  The more gear and pre thought you give it the easier it will be.

Failing that, get in a pro.

Thanks guys, gives me a starting point.

I had a similar problem when i was posting this thread. wrote it all out then it timed out or somthign and had to do it again. cut down version.

I can get a sat finder a friend has one.

The nabour gave me this dish, it still set up for sky where he had it and im going to mount this dish about 4m from the right of his new one where this one was mounted originally. so im thinking if i mount it at the same hieght all i have to do is move the dish a very little amount if any to ge the correct angle

its crimping the ends on that bothers me. I can do RJ45 ends they are easy just never realy tried coax. will cost of the gear and getting a crimper,

any ideas what it cost to get a pro into do it? i would say 30m of cable + time and ends

If you are OK fitting RJ45 plugs, then you should be capable of crimping F connectors onto RG6 cable. It's a different technique of course, but certainly no more difficult - F Connector Installation Instructions. It's not a bad idea to buy a bit more cable than you need for the job, and maybe a spare connector or two to practice with first.

The cost of tools is almost certainly less than paying for someone to do the job. Typically you need:
A crimping tool - I like compression fit connectors, which Sky specify for installations, they require a tool like this - PPC Linear Compression Tool
F Connectors - F Type RG6 Connector Compression Crimp
A tool for stripping the RG6 cable - Rotary Cable Stripper

Thanks deev will take a look at the link.

I mounted the sky dish today (just bolted it up, I wanted to put it on the roof but the mounts was the one for putting it on a wall so i had to put it on the side of the shed which is attached to the house.

I had to put it at the far end to clear a rather large norfak pine, Its about 1m away from the nabours sky dish where this one orginally came from. so i should be ok,

I will borrow a sat finder next weekend and gather the cords and ends.

Will post back to let you know how i got on

30m is a fair bit of cable.
Not out of the question but just watch if you put this into lots of splitters or anything.

The compression fittings are the best, followed by the hex crimp (ask and you can get gel filled ones with rubber O rings) and then finally are the screw on ones which don't require any stripping.  Also you'd want a rubber boot or suitable cover for the outside connection to the lnb.

Put some loops in the cable where it goes into the house if there's any chance of water running down the cable directly into the house when it rains.  ie not an issue if you're going down the house and back up into the house from underneath, but an issue if you go straight down into the roof etc.

Ensure you get 'sky rated RG6' cable.  It's the easiest way to get something decent.  Don't let anyone sell you RG59.

if you don't want to use a crimping too, just buy some self amalgamating tape. I think Jaycar sell it - http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.asp?ID=NM2826&keywords=self+amalgamating+tape&form=KEYWORD

I have used it outside to seal the screw on ends.

Otherwise it sounds like you're on track.

Ok just passed it out I will need about 20m but will buy 30. Whats $20 odd dollars just to make sure you have enough.

I will use the RG6 cable with crimp ends,

Was thinking of getting the cable off trademe, I guess i just have to watch what type i get may post the auction site here first before i buy.

A question about the gel filled ends , is this just for the hex type or is it for the crimp type as well?

I will probly get the ends from a local shop cause then i can see exactly what im getting.
