Hi there

I have recently hooked up another LNB on my dish pointed at Optus D2. Despite plenty of channels, I'm not sure that I will be watching many of them - praise the lord!

One however that I thought looked interesting was Press TV on 12706 V 22500 (according to Lyngsat anyway), but when I scan that transponder I find nothing.

Can anyone tell me if this is still broadcast on Optus D2?

yes, it's still there, alive and kicking. Quite a decent station, though has got its biases (as have all news outlets)

Oh, ok, thanks! I'll try again then.

I note the slightly different tuning - will this be my problem? I am using a single Hauppauge Nove-S-Plus DVB-S card in my PC running Windows 7 Media Centre.

1 MHz is very unlikely to make a difference either way (unless you have issues with unmatched cable impedences, possibly caused by a wrecked tuner - lets not get into that CryWink). Most tuners can auto-lock onto the correct frequency as long as they scan within 10MHz of it. I find 12706V and 12706H particularly weak compared to the rest of the transponders on Optus D2, but that could be just my setup (2 dual output LNBs on a 90cm dish, Optus D2 in off-centre position)...

Ok, I think I need some help here - I don't understand.

Let's take SBS for example off Optus D1

I have been trying to tune this on my media centre. I have been using the frequencies off Lyngsat:

12648 V 22500

However, when I use that I get nothing. If I use:

12646 V 22500

Bingo!!! There they all are.

Why is there an offset on my system? Is there something wrong???

Still can't find Press TV too BTW, tried tuning both up and down the range... but can get all the others???

So you've got Optus D1 and D2 as well. How is it set up?
- 2 dishes or 1?
- dish size?
- DiSEqC switch, multiswitch, motor, or no switch at all?

The symbol rate for SBS is not 22500. It is 12600. Symbol rate is important.

Hi there - firstly, you are absolutly right - the symbol rate is 12600 - sorry, this was a typo.

In terms of my setup, I have a single 75cm dish with a dual output 10750 LNB for Optus D1. Each of the outputs run into a dual DVB-S/S2 BlackGold Card in my HTPC.

This works well for me as I am able to record and / or watch both H and V polarities at the same time.

For Optus D2 I have a bracket attached with another standard 10750 LNB like this:

http://www.freeviewshop.co.nz/zenus-optus-d1d2-bracket-60cm-90cm-dishes-p-427.html

This cable runs down to a dedicated card - a Hauppauge Nova-S-Plus DVB-S card.

So the above setup requires no switches.

All works well, except for the slightly weird tuning as previously described.

Hi again

There is one other possibility for explaining frequency offsets that I forgot to mention before. That is dish/LNB alignment...

To be completely honest I think you're doing quite well to get D2 off the side of a 75cm dish. Like I said, I'm on a 90cm doing a similar thing to you. My dish size advantage will easily be eaten up in the switches and splitters and the fact that my LNB is twin output. Again, that transponder is really borderline here, especially in non-optimal weather. In fact it is so borderline that I have had to patch MediaPortal to ignore my tuners' locked status as it will hardly ever lock on 12706, however the stream is completely watchable (hardly any stutter etc.) Wink

Is the local oscillator frequency for your D2 LNB 11300MHz or 10750MHz?

Ok, so if I am hearing you correctly then I might be better to look at increasing my dish size?

I can testify that the signal is weak in that it easily goes off the air with rain, whereas Freeview off Optus D1 is still solid. SBS is also marginal at times with atmospheric conditions so it would make sense as I am sure that it would help this to be more reliable too.

Would this be your course of action?

Either that, or get a second dedicated dish for Optus D2.
I recommend you wait until some other people weigh in with their opinions. My advice only comes from my own personal experience. I'm not an installer, so I could be wrong. People like cyril7 will be able to give better advice...

Good call - although if a bigger dish increases the reliability of SBS then this will be worth the money.

True.
Here is another idea (I should have done this when I set up my dish). The SBS transponder is on an NANZ (available to NZ and AUS) beam. It is weaker than Freeview because Freeview is on a stronger (by about 5dB) NZB (dedicated NZ) beam. Take a look here. All the transponders on D2 are NANZ transponders, so they're already weaker than Freeview to begin with. To then have the LNB offset on the dish... well, it is not ideal. You should really focus the dish for D2 and get the best signal possible for those transponders then have D1 off centre...

OK. Freq will vary slightly depending on the LNB skew, usually +/- 5. If it's close enough, it'll lock and tune correctly.

Press TV is booming in here on my 90cm with triple LNB. Running at around 14dB. Compared to around 10-11dB for SBS

Thanks for the feedback.
STB or tuner card, and what brand/model?

I use a Dreambox DM7020. I also have a TBS DVB-S2 tuner, but that is only for D1.

You can tune NHK World on 12546V alright?
