I noticed in the Sky EPG that Friends is now in HD. When I had a look I couldn't believe how terrible it looked. The picture is certainly not HD, and does not look upscaled either. How can TVNZ pawn that off as HD?

the bigger question is why TV2 thinks there are people who havent seen it, i swear it would be easier to find the person who hasn't seen it and just deliver the box set and let the rest of us have some peace.

Tees up with the blueray release.

Read somewhere it was one of only a few series shot in full film 35mm. Meaning it has enough image size/movie aspect and able to be scanned into HD format :)

Was it edited in film though?  If not they'd have to scan it and recreate every single show piece by piece, which would be a huge job.

I noticed it also, just wish tv2 whould go to ac3 so we can have 5.1 for HD shows.  Not that it matters for a comedy like friends.

LOL

I looked at it for a few minutes the other day because I noticed it was HD and 16:9 - thought the picture quality was pretty good - a lot of small detail - clothing textures etc were visible.

There is supposed to be a blu-ray version coming and they are supposed to be remastering from the original film stock - Not sure if this is the version that is being screened at the moment though - maybe its a pre-release for TV networks.

It would cost a lot of money to re edit from the original film - but then it screens everywhere so must make them a bit of money. Presumably now having it as a 16:9 HD version gives it extended sales life. I imagine that soon the old 4:3 programs will seem like black and white did after the world went with colour.

Personally I would prefer they 'rest' it for several years....

Tell that to my 17 year old daugher who always insists on watching it when it's one. But then she might have been too young to appreciate it on its first run.

It's the same with some old series of X files...shot on 35mm and now look fantastic in 16x9 (assume there are HD versions avail now too)

If they were shot in 35mm and likely with no matting like Super35, then a 16:9 release would lose some picture from the original image.

The best examples for me at the re-mastered TOS which are in 4:3 and look great on BD. While some could argue the merits of the re-mastered SFX, the non SFX scenes are so clean with such distinct colours, it's a relevation.

Sort of similarly, the BD releases of Thunderbirds also looks very good even though they have been reframed as 16:9. Of course my son doesn't know or care and I can't remember from my youth if there was any loss in picture because of re-framing!

had a wee trawl and found a link to the cinematographers interview from X files

http://motion.kodak.com/US/en/motion/Publications/On_Film_Interviews/bartley.htm

"BARTLEY: I could take a month to answer that question. Things are always changing, and they are also staying the same. We shot The X Files in Super 35 format and framed for 4:3. We protected for 16:9, because we knew it was coming. We also do that on Lost."

apparently no HD as the effects were all in SD. any hoo think we may be falling a bit off topic ;>).

but cool to think these guys were anticipating technology change a long time ago and shooting for it.

The original program was filmed then edited on video tape.

The show was remastered, so yes they would have gone back to the original film and re edited it all.
