Hi

I have a problem with DVBViewer, when I want to record a TV show thats 4:3 DVBViewer records it as 16:9 as shown at the bottom of the program. Here is an example: http://iforce.co.nz/i/hqoyiva1.mpo.jpg is there anyway to enable 4:3 recording of 4:3 shows? 16:9
works fine but some shows I like are 4:3 only.

I realise that DVBViewer just saves the .TS stream directly from the satellite so it may not be possible but if anyone
has a work around they could share that would be great.

Thanks

TV3+1 is a 16:9 channel at all times so that is what you have, a 4:3 program pillarboxed into a 16:9 frame by the broadcaster. Maybe try the Chinese channel (may not be on satellite) which actually is 4:3. Stratos switch between 4:3 and 16:9.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Nothing you can do.

Most major broadcasters globally that broadcast in 16:9 now broadcast fulltime 16:9 with 4:3 content broadcast within the 16:9 frame.

Why do you want to record the 4:3 content in a 4:3 AR?

Because I dont want to have recordings with black bars either side. is there any way I could maybe crop them off?

Thanks

No simple way, Adobe Premiere will do it but you'll have a lot of reencoding to do.

Is you strip them off you're still going to have the black bars when you play it back unless you like watching everything in fatovision stretched horizontally.

Ok well I wont worry too much about it as I dont have Adobe Premiere. Ill just find another way to capture 4:3.

Even if you convert the file to 4:3, all that will achieve is that it will not have the bars when you are viewing it windowed like that, fullscreen it will look the same only the bars will be added by software instead of being in the program.

Better the broadcasters do it then rely on peoples recievers or TVs to be set up correctly to do it. In some cases like with the old sky boxes you have no way of doing it on the box - the other alternative is screwing around cycling thru about 8 different picture modes on the TV when changing channel like when watching CNN or fasion TV on the old sky boxes. I think those are the only 4:3 channels left on there which is strange that sky dont just pillarbox them and make it all 16:9 all the time.

There is no way of capturing 4:3 as no content is broadcast in true 4:3 by any of the major broadcasters. Even analogue is broadcast letterboxed, so if you record this and play it back on a 16:9 screen you'll then be worse off as you'll get the postage stamp effect which is the combination of top and bottom as well as left and right bars.

The only exception to this as richms as said are a handful of Sky channels such as CNN that are broadcast in a 4:3 AR still.

I know its not true 4:3 so Im just going to keep using my USB capture card and sky box set to 4:3. I just thought it might be easier to do it with DVBViewer But I guess not.

Why do you want to capture it at 4:3 tho? Whatever you play it back in will just add the bars back in unless it is improperly configured.

Because I dont have a widescreen TV (yet) and would like to capture it without the black bars, because I only watch things windowed on the PC so It doest matter about the screen adding the black bars to the sides.

Your player should offer a centercut option when playing. I know that my epicly junk DVD player with USB did offer zoom, and I was able to do it in VLC with one of the menu options in the right click list.
