Hi everyone,

Not very good with technology so hoping for some assistance :)

We just bought a brand new high def plasma tv, and a "dish tv S7010PVR Satellite Receiver".

But when we plug it all in and turn the TV on it's not high def, just regular def.

Is the dish TV product we got capable of giving us high def, or do we need to buy another dish tv product to get high def?

We have an HDMI cable if that is useful in any way.

Help??!!

Thanks!

Poppy

Freeview satellite is not in HD. You need freeview via UHF aerial to get HD.

This site kind of explains it...

http://www.freeviewnz.tv/get_freeview/page/which_freeview_service_is_right_for_you

Your only option to get HD via satellite (assuming you don't live in a freeview HD area), is to subscribe to MySKy HDi.

If you bought a brand new HD TV then it will have a built in Freeview tuner and provided you connect a UHF antenna and live in a Freeview Terrestrial area you will be able to watch programs in HD (but only if they are broadcast in HD).
The only way to get HD via satellite is with MySkyHDI or MySKY+ with an HD ticket as well. And then only on a few channels (Sport and Movies).
Add a Blu-Ray player and you can watch HD movies.

P.S.
If you can receive DVB-T (Terrestrial UHF) on your TV then take your satellite receiver back and ask for your money back.
Any salesperson who knows anything should have explained all this to you when you bought the TV.

Freeview is available two ways: from satellite and UHF aerial. Only Freeview via UHF, "Freeview|HD", is available in HD.

3/4ths of homes are in the UHF broadcast area. This is being expanded to 87% in the coming few months.

If a shop sold you a satellite receiver it suggests you are either not in the Freeview|HD broadcast area or they may have no idea what they're doing.

Where are you?

Are you sure it is the S7010PVR they gave you and not the S7090PVR? The S7010PVR would be a very unusual item for a retail chain to sell as they generally don't sell non Freeview-approved satellite receivers. Did you buy these on Trademe?

If you are indeed outside of the Freeview|HD broadcast area then you'll need a satellite receiver. Your plasma TV won't have a satellite receiver built-in. The S7010PVR has very basic recording facilities with no built-in hard drive and a single tuner. A double tuner DVS-S2 satellite receiver like the S7090PVR, Vu Duo or Ultraplus F9000 is much better because you can do things like record TV1 to the internal hard drive while watching TV3, or watch the Australian channels on the satellite in HD (outside Freeview). I don't think the S7090PVR supports the EPG on non Freeview channels, while the non Freeview PVRs won't support Freeview series-link recording.

We have an HDMI cable if that is useful in any way.

The S7010PVR does not support digital HDMI output. Its best connection is ypbpr component. If you are one of the 13% outside of the Freeview|HD broadcast area and don't plan on subscribing to SkyHDI then it would be better to have a receiver with HDMI. The high end double tuner models all have HDMI as do a few cheap ones like the Ultraplus 700HDMI.

*facepalm* sales rep
Sales reps are trained to ask people whether they have an aerial or a satellite dish and sell you what fits.

If you can receive DVB-T (Terrestrial UHF) on your TV then take your satellite receiver back and ask for your money back.

A satellite receiver of some kind is still needed to receive SBS off the satellite. A DVB-S2 model is needed for the other Austalian stations but who knows how long they'll be there for.

joker97: *facepalm* sales rep

Lol
I would have to ask did Poppy ask, or did the sales rep talk about it? Sales people can only do so much.....

It would depend where the OP lives. I thought the UHF range was supposed to be extended for the world cup. There hasn't been any recent news on this, and the world cup starts soon.

Thanks for your responses everyone.  We rent in the centre of Hamilton but there is apparently no UHF arial on the roof because all the previous tennants have had Sky dishes.  So the landlords bought the satellite receiver for us instead.  Just going to put up with normal definition for now.  Shame we bought a high def TV!

ALL new TV's are high def so don't reget buying it as there was no choice.

If you don't have a UHF antenna, then the Draco Ant 200 antenna is worth a try as they work indoors or out. Try Trade me.

If you are in the center of hamilton then you should be able to get the infill coverage. When I was there near claudelands the laptop was quite happily getting it inside with the stupid little stick antenna, no idea if it was infill or the main coverage but just get some indoor antenna and give it a shot.

HD is _____SO_____ much better than the blockky crap off satillite.

We're in a similar boat, new TV with built in Freeview, cant use it because no coverage here....asking Freeview if it was going to be available around here seemed to be a waste of time, just gave me a media response of "will be available to 86% of the country in time for RWC" - 1) I didnt ask about the rest of the country. 2) I couldnt give a flying fish about the RWC. :)

So back to the Digistar DVB-S boxes we went.
