Yea that was pretty crazy. I dont know if it was snowing in Nelson. it didn't seem to be here in stoke.

We also had to switch back to analogue for house. It's amazing how quick you get used to digital hd

I'm in Motueka too and have not been able to get freeview terrestrial signal since the snow. I thought they may have switched it off again in this area. Can someone please confirm that freeview terrestrial is currently (26/7/2011) working still? I have new equipment so need to know if my equipment is the issue or the broadcast.

cheers

why does freeview HD seem so susceptible to outages compared to the old analogue system?

Thanks for the quick reply injuised.

Guess I might need to look further into my stuff, are you getting signal from Mt Campbell or Kaka hill? and vertical or horizontal?

I put up a new medium gain antenna with new cable and was getting good reception (but the channels did freeze now and again) but it all suddenly stopped. I also just got a new media centre (Tvix slim s1 duo) with dual freeview tuners so not sure if that was the problem either. Gonna be a bit of problem solving I think. :)

So far I have tried the antenna cable direct into my TV for the old analogue signal and can get Prime etc fine so I guess the antennas fine.

Should be vertical off Mt Campbell , Kaka hill is an infill for Nelson central

From a reception perspective, DTT has the advantage of showing a perfect picture even if the signal level is poor. Unfortunately this means that a lot of viewers think they have great reception, when they actually are close to losing the signal.

A lot of DTT viewers have just plugged in the TV aerial and it worked so they think it's job done. Maybe the aerial is only VHF or it's UHF but on the wrong polarity or aiming at the wrong site. I even heard of a DTT receiver plugged into a Sky dish and working...

Later, when they lose a group of channels or some pixellation occurs, they blame the transmission. "It must be that one of the channels is transmitted at a lower power" they will say... In reality it is their own antenna system that is at fault.

Also UHF is more susceptible to fade through wet trees where VHF found a way through.

Transmission wise, reliability is always worse at the start and end of the lifetime of the equipment, and with so much brand new gear in the chain, there are bound to be early failures. Also the analog TV system is a very mature technology, over so much time, all the bugs were well sorted in both the transmission and receivers.

don't mess with me.... i'm the hd insider....
