Hi all, (my first question here, so sorry if I've covered the same ground as any previous ones)

I currently have a powered 5x4 multiswitch installed on the roof (getting D1 H&V, D2 V, and Intelsat-5), and that is all working well.

I am thinking about installing a motorised 1.8m dish (or bigger) with a C-band LNB (and possibly Ku-band with theC/Ku LNBF w/22KHz Switching) mainly for the Asiasat group of sats (if 1.8m is big enough)

I've run out of inputs on my multiswitch, so I may have to switch it out for a 9x4. (I also might get D2 H for the Spanish subscriber channels)

But I have a couple questions:

Can I put an output from one multswitch and use it as an input to another multiswitch?
Plus for controlling a motorised dish should I bypass the multiswitch and be happy to have any channels I get from it on only one TV?
(ie can the DiSEqC signals be passed through a multiswitch, and the commands come from one set-top box, but the signals go to more?)

Cheers,
Matt

Hi Matt

Interesting question.

Can I put an output from one multswitch and use it as an input to another multiswitch?

The 9x8 multiswitch that I use would allow that, but it would be somewhat pointless for me as the control signals on the multiswitch inputs are fixed. In other words, the voltage and 22 k signals that are sent to the LNBs are set by the multiswitch, irrespective of what the connected receivers send... which I think is normal for multiswitches. So to summarise: I don't think that is the way that most multiswitches are intended to be used.

Plus for controlling a motorised dish should I bypass the multiswitch and be happy to have any channels I get from it on only one TV? (ie can the DiSEqC signals be passed through a multiswitch, and the commands come from one set-top box, but the signals go to more?)

I think the same thing as above applies, however I'm not certain. I can definitely see how that could work and be really useful. Perhaps some do and some don't, so you'd have to check whether your multiswitch:
1. Input current (current to LNBs) is sufficient to support driving the motor.
2. Supports pass-through of DiSEqC commands.

It is possible that any DiSEqC commands from any receivers would be passed to all inputs... which would probably be fine as long as you only had one motor connected. Equally, it is possible that the DiSEqC commands from a given receiver are only passed to the output that it is "connected" to. If that is the case *and* your multiswitch is controlled by DiSEqC signalling then you're going to need an STB (or if using an HTPC, software) that allows you to send the commands in the right order...

Personally I'd think it would be easier just to set the motorised dish up separately.
