hi all, i just upgraded my bedroom to to a 32" Sony Bravia with built in Freeview,
i had a dvb-t box that wasn't from NZ, and i picked up about five other channel that i don't have now (Chinese, TV33 , stratus and a few others, my question is would i be able to get those with the built in Freeview and how, oh I'm in New Plymouth btw.

They should be available if you could get them on your previous STB. Usually those services are on a higher frequency MUX than the other stuff. Higher frequencies are more susceptible to cable losses so this may be taking them below the signal threshold that your new TV is capable of detecting. It is presumably less sensitive than your STB. You need to look at your aerial distribution and cabling to address this issue.

Are you getting Maori and Prime?
They're on the same MUX as as the ones you seem to be missing. Try a manual tune on channel 36 (594mhz) and check signal strength.
Using VLC with my HVR2200 tuner I see a lot of channels but can't seem to tune them all.
According to info at Freeview Shop TV33 is only available in Auckland. Must be something strange happening though as I can't receive it on VLC but it's OK on WinTV7.

Aren't these channels regionally restricted on freeview-approved devices?

The regional channels that are unavailable in your region are "hidden" on approved devices and won't show in a channel scan. The details are still transmitted in the EIT tables however so non approved devices will see these when they do a channel scan.
