Hi all,

Does anyone know if I should be able to get Dolby Digital output from the DishTV T1050PVR?

PVR connected to receiver using coax digital connection. I'm getting sound but not being detected as Dolby Digital. I've selected the correct audio stream on the TV transmission.

The same channels received on inbuilt tuner in TV (Panasonic TH-50PZ850AZ), output to same surround receiver using optical digital connection is correctly detected as Dolby Digital - provided I configure the TV optical output as Auto (not PCM). So I'm wondering if the DishTV is outputting as the wrong format - but I can't see any options in the PVR to set the output type for the digital output. I don't believe the fact that one is a coax and the other an optical connection should make a difference.

Any ideas?

Cheers.

Well the Manual online would indicate there should be Dolby Digital out. What happens if you feed the Audio via HDMI to the TV then TV's optical to the Receiver/Amp. On my Sony TV dolby digital is fed through to the Amp.
Have you checked the input settings for the co-ax input on your amp? May be a bad setting there (different to the optical input).
I find strange things happen with my A C Ryan Media Player in the audio department. Programs I record on the PC (.ts files) and play via the Network will send Dolby Digital audio out the optical out on the Player provided the recorded transmission actually has 5.1 content. If it had stereo content but in the Dolby carrier them nothing is output via optical and I have to use the HDMI to deliver the sound to the amp via the TV. This seems to be only with TVNZ though and TV3 recordings always seem to ouput Dolby regardless of content. Maybe the Dish TV only outputs digitial if it is receiving 5.1 content?

Thanks for the suggestion. Feeding audio over HDMI to the TV, then setting amp to use the optical out from the TV has the same result i.e. no Dolby. Pretty sure the DishTV is outputting PCM - it behaves the same as if I set my TV to output PCM.

The only reference I can find to Dolgy Digital in the manual is "this product is capable of receiving and decoding Dolby Digital Plus". Looks like it does EXACTLY that - decodes it - but doesn't output it in its natvie format.

Oh well, guess I have to hope this gets addressed in a future firmware.

Cheers.

I had the same problem!

The answer is to select the AC3 audio stream then go to the settings menu and set the output to Compressed. The default is Uncompressed but the T1050 is only capable of decompressing the audio stream to stereo whereas your receiver should be able to decompress the stream to Dolby 5.1.

If the AC3 stream is not available then the broadcast is in stereo only not Dolby.
