Finally plugged a network cable into my MagicTV, and found that I have an available firmware update (from 3.12 to 3.17). I'm keen on the update - bug fixes and improvements of FF/RW and general stability sound worthwhile - but I'm always weary of updating firmware, so wondering if there's much risk of bricking etc. Also, do I lose any existing stored programs (ie does it require a format or anything?!) and does it affect the existing TO DO list (do I have to reset all my recordings in the guide?).

Thanks for any info on this.
Glenn

Well I've updated the firmware in my TV, Blu Ray Player, Blu Ray recorder and Media Player with no ill effects. Just follow the instructions. No different ot a Windows update on a PC and has no effect on anything but the OS.

You can also download the update from Magic tv, unzip it, put the 4 files on a usb flash drive and update it manually. See the alternate 3.17 firmware (with different forward/backward skips) discussion at previous discussion.

I've been through several firmware updates and haven't lost the to do list.

Hi, thanks to you both for your replies. I had a go at an internet upgrade via the menus but didn't get far. It detects 3.17 but about 1 second after I click Start Upgrade I get the message "ERROR: Upgrade process is aborted!". Also some warning about having disabled scheduled recording. But essentially nothing happens. Anyone seen this? I rebooted the system and tried again but no change. The manual also says it will detect a new version on startup and prompt you to upgrade but this doesn't happen.

I guess I'll have to try the USB upgrade instead, and will definitely consider the patched version as I miss the nice 1 minute skipping from my old Panasonic analogue recorder! 4 minutes is even better!

Cheers again

Can someone tell me the main changes between 3.13 b2 and the latest version?
I think the skip forward 10 mins and skip back 6 mins (to make a result of 4 mins forward) was removed in a later version?
That is why I have not upgraded
Thanks and apologies for going a little off topic

The main difference is the 3.17 version is far less prone to crashing.

If you still want to jump forwards 4minutes the second firmware patch posted by 1lostkiwis does that

The release notes are vague
So is the new 4 min forward an unofficial hack?

Yes. It also lets you browse the HDD via a web browser.
