Hi there,
Long time looker, in frequent poster!

So i want a PVR that can do the basics
Record 2 Freeview channels while watching a 3rd.
Nice big HDD (e.g. 1TB)
EPG
Easy to use interface
Series recording
Not too pricey (<$400).

I also want to be able to plug in my current HDD and play all the movies and other media files i have  gathered over the years. I really would like one 'box' that can do it all and can play all the various formats (JPEG, MP3, MP4, DivX, AVI, VOB, MKV).

So in my trawling of the web i found this Digistar DS-920 on trademe which is cheap....but i'm wondering if "what you pay for is what you get"?

I have read a number of reviews about Tivo, magic box etc.... Tivo is looking good at the moment, especially the price! but they can't play these all formatted files (please correct me if I'm wrong!)

I have read most of the posts on the Digistar 811(insert letter here) and they sound quite good, but those posts are quite old now.

So any opinions on the current models of these Digistars or anyone got another alternative machine they have used and ticks all the above boxes??

 Thanks

I have one of the original Digistar 811's, and it is still going strong in the spare room. As for the 920, be careful about the EPG - I am almost sure it only has now and next, not the full Freeview EPG. I have a Tivo, and it is great!

I don't think TiVo accepts the external HDD. How about TiVo + a basic media player...cheap as chips these days.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Correct - it Tivo does not accept USB Hard Disk or solid drive.

According to http://www.tivo.com/assets/popups/popup_compatiblewebvideos.html

"Compatible web videosIf you have downloaded videos from the Internet in any of the following formats, you can use TiVo Desktop Plus software for the PC to transfer them to your network-connected TiVo DVR to view them on your TV:

Windows Media Video (.wmv)
QuickTime Movie (.mov)
MPEG-4/H.264 (.mp4, .m4v, .mp4v)
MPEG-2 (.mpg, .mpeg, .mpe, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpv2)
DivX and Xvid (.avi, .divx)"

and of course .tivo files

Have been thinking about a media player, but i'm trying to reduce the number of power cords and boxes sitting under the Tv. Currently i'm using my laptop hooked up to the Tv (via HDMI) to play my movies. So instead of buying two more boxes i was hoping to get just one.

Foamfollower, i think you are right about the limited EPG function...its crap...

Price wise Tivo is winning...still i would like something with a media player as well.....
