Just updated on Wikipedia and also on the Freeview site, Freeview HD has now be renamed to "Freeview UHF"

Only 3 of the 12 Freeview HD... um UHF channels I have tuned are in HD, rest are SD.

I guess the HD name is no longer accurate!

Cheers,
Joseph

I always wondered why they called it HD when only a few of the channels were in HD. More accurate now. Keep in mind, this will probably confuse a lot of people.

It also leaves it open if Satellite ever gets HD channels (Possibility = Slim to none).

Freeview have already publicly announced freeview Satelite will NOT be giong HD. While we are on the subject I am stunned both FOUR and Prime are not in HD.....

The renaming is good because it will stop viewers confusion when it comes to installation. I've seen dishes plugged into HD tuners out there and it doesn't work too well!

As for Four and Prime in HD, they'll need more viewer numbers to afford the half million dollars each that it would cost to upgrade.

Bull, this is paid for by taxpayers (at least in part).

yep paid by taxpayer.  I remember the days we had to pay a TV licence and people having aerials inside so to try and avoid paying the license fee.  Then the fee was incorporated into the taxes  so everyone pays the tv licence fee.  Knowing the government they use it to pay their perks now instead of in broadcasting.

Yep, like the JDA areas.

What?? Four and Prime are taxpayer funded? Although a few shows on these channels are part paid for by nz on air, there is no other taxpayer money involved. It could be argued that by paying fees to the government for licences to transmit, these channels pay the taxpayer.

If they are renaming it to Freeview UFH then does this leave room for a 'Freeview UFB' or 'Freeview IP'

i.e. instead of freeview being delivered over UHF, it will be delivered over IP.

Thats always possible. I was watching the TVNZ live stream the other day and it ran about 5 minutes into Coronation Street after the news then cut off. Everything is possible ;)

I asked that in a Freeview Q&A and the answer was no, due to the similar coverage of UHF and UFB.

The answer was no, due to the fact they wouldn't be able to charge nearly as much as they do now for an internet-based service.

@Cody: That seems a bit cynical. I know Freeview charges are steep, however as far as I'm aware their charges don't have anything to do with transmission costs. Transmission costs are paid on top of the Freeview fees to companies like Kordia for space on the satellite/terrestrial rmux. It is possible that there would be lower transmission costs for an IP/internet service, however I fail to see how Freeview charges would be affected. Are you suggesting Freeview would have to lower their charges to prevent providers from starting their own IPTV platforms?
