I worry that Plex will become bloated and less stable by adding functionality they never intended to create.

Yeah I would have preferred it to be add on/channel based as well and to concentrate on what they do well, rather than this.  And maybe farm out the dvr function to a channel.   But hopefully they'll add some better api calls for channels.  It's annoying in a channel you can't specify a timecode for start or skip.  Makes it difficult to implement channel skipping, or resume.

Hello, does anyone here have a Plex pass and HD Homerun device? I'm interested in the feasibility of this in NZ:

https://www.plex.tv/features/dvr/

No mention of the HDHR3 being supported, but I'd still be interested to have a go. I would buy a Plex pass if it would work. Heck I'd buy a HDHR4 if it would work. I have been in a holding pattern for years with the HTPC, and it's lack of remote friendly Netflix.

Hello, did you guys have a chance to play with this? Plex are being annoying by restricting the Plex DVR forum to only Plex Pass subscribers. Implying that I have to pay just to find out if this would even work in NZ (Yes, I see NZ in the list, but it's pretty vague on what 'works' looks like)

Things I want to know are:

If the EPG is rubbish can I provide my own XMLTV file?

Does OpenPHT client work with this? Heck, which clients work with this?

Can I schedule shows to record using a client device or will I need to log into the Plex Web interface?

My current windows media center will happily decode NZ Freeview with hardware acceleration. Will this still work in Plex land? My server is dual core celeron and doesn't like transcoding. Really doesn't like it.

In the latest beta (2 days ago) there's XMLTV import, the next beta will have a GUI for it too :)

The EPG looks pretty good actually, though takes forever to update, presumably because it gets the data from the HD Homerun then checks for more info via the interwebs?  Actually, from setup, I think you point it at a website (there were a few options).

The upcoming movies is actually pretty useful!

I have only been able to get access to the programme guide etc through the web app (haven't tried home theater and doesn't show on the android app).

Might be able to help with the last two:

Have to use the web interface at this point -- can't use the client
I am running Plex on my Arm Synology and it does transcoding but very slowly - can't see an automated way to do it.

Re: the other questions will have a look later - hasn't come up for me as I am in the UK and the guide is ol.

Thank you both for the info, sounds like it is still not providing the necessary WAF to go into production in the house just yet.

We wouldn't need live TV, but I would want the original transport stream if the client is capable of decoding it. Scheduling from the client is also non negotiable.

I'm using plex dvr with homerunhd connect.

It works well, although I can't seem to record from prime for some reason. The EPG is good but not complete, and is by show rather than the standard EPG.

I can watch live tv from the homerun on the Xbox one and on computers ( although both the Xbox one and windows 10 apps seem seriously broken for some channels with massive skills skipping and stuttering. not sure why? Anyone have any idea?

Really want to get a good EPG,running though - -again I'm not sure how to do this.

That's kind of what Plex is all about though. Wouldn't you rather be searching by show and finding out when the next episode is on that way, rather than looking through a chronologically ordered list of shows that you're not really interested in?

Anyway, if anyone has an update on this, I'm interested in how it's progressed in NZ.

Update - plex live tv streaming is now supported for plexpassers. Got the update email overnight.

Details here.

One of the additions is they're supporting a wider range of tuners too - nothing DVB-S yet though.

The main issue I have with the plex DVR, is that it seems their EPG data is sourced from gracenote.  See here: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1450088#Comment_1450088

So the individual entries must come from the EIT data, but then every entry is checked against the Gracenote DB.

Seems a weird way of doing it, but its why so many of our shows are misreported, ie Shorty st and Masterchef are listed as movies.

I tried the live tv this morning on IOS and it crashed my client.  So not sure what's up with that....it also reports it can't see my tuner, even though its on the address it says it's on.

I am not a good geek to answer your questions but I am having issues playing a recorded program i.e. sound but no picture. I have a HDHomeRun Connect (with DVR capabilities with their App) and Plex will happily play these programs, with sound (with Plex monitoring a folder written by HDHomeRun).

Now trying to test some sort of Transcoding by the HDHomeRun within Plex.

Still trying to work out what works for me and does not. It's very painful. I'd like to give Emby a go. But they want money (OK I can just do one month).

Not happy in that I had to purchase a Plex Pass to try the DVR functionality. So far, it has been worthless to me.

The EPG is rubbish. Buy the TV Guide (NZ) and then search for your program (only updates once a day I believe by the Plex Scheduler).

PS I have an Intel NUC I7I5 (latest, 2017) running Windows 10 Home and the Plex Client is a FireTV.

Sorry if this is harsh, but I wonder whether the average user can sort out the issues. I put myself as just above the average.

PC: Dell Inspiron 16 5640 (Windows 11 Home), Dell Inspiron 7591 2n1 (Windows 11 Pro), HP ProBook 470G1 (Windows 10 Pro), Intel NUC7I5BNH (Zorin)
Net: Grandstream 1 x GWN7062 Router, 1 x GWN7665 Access Point
Storage: Synology DS216play NAS, 2 x 6TB

Yes you can provide your own xmltv file, but it still gas the same issues, shows are identucued by show identifier, and even better with a gracenite id.

After the moment only the android and iOS clients work for live tv. Web can see recordings I think. Not sure Apple TV or pht.

I'd post an image of the iOS client, but I can't upload images. This bugs like 20/20, shorty street, Masterchef etc, all show up as movies, as they don't have episode information.

I tried. And was messaging a Chris Allen from nz, but never got anywhere. It's to do with gracenote. We'd probably have better luck getting epg collector updated to include the gracenote series info and Id.
