Ack, perhaps this is a 9.7 issue.

I looked at this a bit closer again, seeing how smbunn saw something similar, and I still have the recording where I saw the issue.

For my experience, the regular (every 10 secs like a metronome) appearance of a corrupted previous frame is reproducible, and starts to occur after a certain point in the recording, where a noticeable glitch in the playback occurs. If I begin viewing just after this point, no corruption occurs right up to the end of the recording. Also, once the corruption is occuring, if I simply jump back 15 sec in mediaportal the corruption is cured. If I start playback just before the glitch, the regular corruption starts, If I start playback just after the glitch, no corruption.

So, in my case the playback corruption seems to be initiated by a glitch in a particular part of the recorded TV.

I dont think its a 9.7 issue, as the 9.7 fixed so many of the other problems. ie I couldn't even watch SD channels

Actually I think it is an ATI issue. I recorded some TV, it plays fine on my Nvidia set up, and glitches on my ATI setup. I started event recorder and saw regular activity at exactly the same time as the glitch. The activity is "deferred procedure calls and interrupt routines". A quick search of the net shows this issue has been reported numerous times, with the ATI driver being blamed each time.

I went to report it on the AMD forum but found I have been blacklisted!

I'm in denial...
I never buy AMD / ATI, but a friend convinced me that this was the perfect solution for a HTPC.
I dont want to believe it.....What voices in my head?

I'm in general affirmation of the AMD/ATI/Vista/Mediaportal/Powerdvd solution. The only problems I see are related to a dodgy terrestrial signal.

Seems like for a new build Win7 may make this easier on the software side.

I loaded the latest AMD northbridge drivers (this was recommended on another forum) but still no luck. The fact that my wife and four daughters went back to the DSE Freeview box says it all.
I re-installed the Nvidia card and its sweet again.
The family have forgiven me and are usng the HTPC again.
AMD need to understand that WAF is the only measure of performance on a home theatre PC!

I'm fairy sure it is a ATI driver issue (as you mentioned).

I've finally given up on my 780G. I kept getting little jumps in TV3, both in XP and Win 7. Tried multiple combination's of drivers but could never get the performance I wanted.
So why's it taken me so long to upgrade? I was waiting for a silent radeon 4670 that met my needs to be available in NZ (and it finally is). Installed a sapphire radeon 4670 ultimate today, completely passive cooling and no need for extra power adapter. The added bonus is that it does not take up an extra port (unlike the HIS isilence one) and has a native HDMI port- please note, it only allows a half height card in the slot above it (I've got a HVR2200).
Could have gone with a 4350/4550 of course, but this card will also handle gaming up to 1280 x 720 with high detail and has processing to spare without upping the power requirements too much.

Installed the standard drivers with the card and in XP all the issues I was experiencing are now gone. Haven't tried W7 MC yet but not too worried about it at this stage.

I'm stoked- its passive, powerful (enough for me anyhow) and 7.1 HDMI sound (although downsampled by software of course). Of course this is first impressions, I'm sure I'll be on later with issues that make owning a HTPC so much fun :-)

some people bagged on the 4770, if you were gaming i think it is a better choice. apparently it doesn't undervolt as well and isn't as power savvy. somepeople also reported having some other problems with it (which i forget what they were exactly), more people seemed to like the 4670 for htpc.

btw - i have powercolour 4670 1gb. i choose the 1gb, bc it was only $10 extra. also the 512mb version in the states has faster video ram, but the NZ version has slower speed ram in both 512 and 1024 version

Sounds like a nice upgrade. Did you consider the Sapphire 4770?

I did and it is a valid option, especially if you want to game at a higher resolution. It does need an extra power connector though and with my rig there is no room for this. I have heard people running it without connecting the extra power input, but that is likely to give issues when doing activites that draw more power I think.

That and the fact it draws a bit more power in idle were enough to swing things in favour of the 4670 for me (oh, and being passively cooled as well)

I imagine there will be a more powerful card down the line that meets my needs, but I'm happy to have pulled the trigger now.
