Hi, how do I set the domain name and server name in the Outlook add exchange account?

I have thoroughly searched online and followed the instructions on support on google for adding an email client. (Screenshots hopefully are attached) .
I submit the form but every time it comes back 'unable to connect to server'.

I do have credit & am able to send & recieve emails & view websites.

My Android phone is Huawei p8 GRAL09, bought from a major store in nz.

I am trying to email a link on a website , where I was prompted to add exchange or xtra (I dont have this) or other. Other being outlook, which I am trying to enable for my gmail account.

I have double checked my gmail & google password and user name. I even logged in and out and turned phone on and off.

You would usually use the gmail app with gmail, it should be on the phone and already to go. Outlook could probably be set up to do it over imap but really the gmail app is the best.

If you're getting a wrong app when opening a link, go to settings and then applications and default apps (not too familiar with the huawai skin in android but probably similar) and then change the email option to gmail so that is what opens when you hit a link.

Thanks. Im using Gmail and also trying to add Outlook so I can use both - as ive explained & described what I have done and why in my forum post.

Its not adding an exchange account to outlook, that was removed from google ages ago, you have to use imap if setting up manually but I just tried now, went into outlook, settings, add account and then put my gmail address and it just popped open and asked for authentication to connect it and it seems to work without any server configuration at all.

Where are you trying to add the account?

In my apps I already have Gmail, its running. Previously I also checked for updates.

Yes, I agree it shouldn't be this complicated!

Here's a screenshot of the Outlook configure / activate page. (I do have my correct username entered when I submit it)

Im not sure if I have the correct domain name and/or server name (for my gmail that im trying to link)

I downloaded Microsoft outlook which automatically entered the correct gmail domain & server.

However, the notification came back unable to connect to server.
My username & password is correct
IMAP shows as being enabled when I change to gmail desktop mode.

I think ill phone 2degrees tomorrow

It's not really a 2Degrees issue. What are you ultimately trying to achieve here? Just setting up your GMail account on your phone?

If so, as you've said, you've got the GMail app installed, is there a reason you don't want to/can't use that?

OK, this looks like what you are trying to achieve. For my sake, please clarify. Are you trying to

share the URL of the website you are currently visiting with somebody else via email?
or are you tapping on an email address listed on the web page & expect your email app to open to send them a mail?

Those are very different scenarios.

Hi, firstly, Alex - I have gmail running as my email , for example I am using my gmail address to read & reply to this thread.

Yes, scenario 2 . On someone elses website I clicked the address link to contact them, and I was directed to a window offering me the options of using:

-Exchange
-Xtra ( ive looked, I cant get an Xtra email address for me without spark home internet, which I dont have)
-Other

When I put in my gmail adress & correct password & submit, the result is 'unable to connect to server'
- my gmail IMAP is enabled.
- ive logged in & out of my gmail to check my password & user name are correct & yes they are.

I installed Microsoft outlook app. Tried to add other email again & I got a bit further, with the gmail domain & server names appearing automatically, but same end result - unable to connect to server

As previously stated. You should really install the Gmail app (program) on your phone. You are using Gmail via your web browser at the moment.

I think this article might help you choose the Gmail app once you have installed it.

Every operating system cna have protocol handlers registered so it know what to do when it comes across stuff like, http://, smb://, file://, tel: and in your case, mailto:. Either the OS handles this internally, or it passes the URL of the protocol to the registered app. So the question then becomes, what is the registered mail app on your phone? Do you have Gmail from Google LLC installed? As per jarledb's comment above, is it the default mail app? Based on your frustrations, it seems like this is not the default app.

If you go to Settings > Accounts > Google accounts; your account should be listed there. If it is, sweet, the Gmail app should recognise it. If not, add your Google account so that the Gmail app can recognise it. As per jarledb's post (again), make sure the Gmail app is the default. Clicking the mailto: link will then work and open a new mail window in the Gmail app.

To me, it seems your problems stem from two issues.

Possibly, you are using the default "Internet" browser to surf the web instead of Google Chrome.
Most assuredly, the mail app from Huawei is currently your default. Because you don't use it, you now need to link an account to it. Unfortunately, uninstalling and / or disabling it will break other stuff.

Do you read your email on your phone using an app & it looks similar to this:

or does it look more like this? (Notice the URL bar at the top & the tabs button (#2 / green switch between tabs)?)

Jaled, I clicked on your link and found out my phone is android 5 and some updates etc require Android 9. Your link also led to other useful info, I didnt have time earlier to look into it.

Ive contacted the website I originally was trying to message by a different contacting way so for now this is less urgent. Although I do want to see it through & get my phone functioning 100%.

I am quite good at getting computer software functions, drivers etc installed & running for photos & music.

Lcl thanks for the screenshots. My gmail is the phone app in the top pic. Yes, I agree it could be something to do with.default settings. I am careful not to modify any settings unless I clearly understand what im doing or have a screenshot to refer back to.

No, it isn't. That is a browser, not the Gmail app.

Hi Charrrlotte, as others have said you are using Gmail via a web browser, presumably Chrome, on your phone, that is fine and hiw you correctly access it on a PC, however on a phone you should use the Gmail app as jarleb has shown above, this gives access to all your email as if on your PC, but is optimised in it's operation on a phone and should interact with links etc correctly.
