I've tried a dozen combinations and none of them seem to work (even the most random I could think of).

Just spoke to the helpdesk, they told me to try again tomorrow morning after 9am as their online system may not be up to date, and the numbers I'm trying will probably be available tomorrow.

Here's hoping.

(side note: Fantastic customer support, answered in a couple of rings, plus I like the personal language used in the pre-recorded messages)

Colour me stupid... Does the SIM card came without a number allocated to it? I saw that you need a number and a password to get into Your 2degrees, and to sign-up you need to enter a phone number.

What if I want to choose my unique number? Where/when do I do that?

From what I understand, the SIM has a "random" number already assigned, and you can then log in using that number and change it to one of your choosing.

Correct. Make a call to activate the new sim first. Then signup on the 2 degrees website to create an account. They txt you a temporary password which you can then use to logon to your "My 2 degrees" section of the website (secure logon). From there you can port a number, select a new number, topup, etc etc ...

Seems that you can pick numbers that start with 0 only, nothing else is accepted. Even then many that I tried don't work but there are plenty that do just not the ones I would like!

As others have said, the procedure is as follows:

Get sim (given, i'd recommend the $2 with a $20 top up, which gives you the magic 100 free texts and cheaper landline/022 calling)
insert sim into SIM capable phone (sorry classic 027)
Call 200 to setup PIN (also activates phone) - Do not bother with voicemail setup yet
This should trigger a text from 2degrees about your balance
head to https://secure.2degreesmobile.co.nz and click sign up
enter phone number which will trigger another text with a temp password enclosed
login
on the left pane is a change number link
you're currently limited to 0220 XXX XXX
if you see "Information Not Available", that number is not allowed/pre-allocated
Get creative!!

freitasm: Only 0 prefixed numbers? That's not fun!

Does limit creativity but I still got a sweet number so I'm not complaining!

True but 0220 has a nice symmetry about it :)

For people having trouble finding numbers remember to try partial numbers first, you might get some interesting ideas.

But my unique number that I plan to get hold of is 7 digits... unless I get a SIM now and get one 6 digits number, then when 7 digits is available, I'll get another SIM.

Hmm, i blocked my sim by 3 incorrect attempts, rung customer service (excellent by the way) reset password and account and i still get a incorrect password or ph number message. I am fairly confident i am doing it correctly (assuming i enter the number complete with 022 prefix) anyone else have an issue?

Yup me too - your password is over 10 characters.  When you enter it seems to be capped at 10, and therefore when you try and login later it'll be incorrect because that part does not clip the character length. try the first 10 char only, or use a shorter one :/

if you confirm this I'll give them a call to let them know...

What? Limiting the password digits to 10? That's is totally stupid! What if one want to use super complex password protection? The least they should do is actually tell the user that it only take 10 chars, or open-limit.

Geez.

chiefie I think it's a bug, remember the service hasn't been live for 12 hour yet, but if anyone else has experienced this as well i'd be interested to know.
