Hi There!

Is it valid licensing to use SBS as the Hyper-V Host and then put the 2008 R2 Instance as a guest of that OS? The customer uses tape and so putting the 2008 R2 as the host and then SBS and R2 as guests won't (To my knowledge) work with the tape and backup software solution they already own.

Sbs2011 doesn't support the hyper-v role so you can't do what you want to do.

Do you have some supporting documentation that states that the licensing wouldn't be valid in this configuration? They are using the correct number of licenses as far as I can tell and even if it's not technically supported, it's really only at this stage the licensing I am worried about.

As far as I know you can't even install the hyper-v role on sbs2011 and if you do it breaks a lot of things, mainly the wizards for networking etc.

CYaBro: As far as I know you can't even install the hyper-v role on sbs2011 and if you do it breaks a lot of things, mainly the wizards for networking etc.

We have hyper-v installed on a few sbs sites, the role installs fine, we have had next to no issues. We mainly use it for things like spam filters etc.

All I really need at this stage is a written confirmation that isn't not supported by licensing.

Hi Nathan any progress on checking the status of the licensing in this proposed configuration? If it's a matter of the EULA not specifically blocking the use in a specific way, is it by default allowed?

not sure about the licensing component but Ive run this configuration before. It does work even though its unsupported however I think the DHCP service needed a bit of TLC as well as some other network components.

If I was you I wouldn't be proposing a solution that is unsupported

Do you have the Premium add-on? if the answer is yes you can use that as a Host

You cannot use the SBS 2011 Essentials or SBS 2011 Standard server as a Hyper-V host. You may use the Premium Add-on to run the Hyper-V server role

Virtualization

If you have a server running Hyper-V (or other virtualization technology) which was purchased and licensed separately, you can run the SBS 2011 products as a VOSE on that host. This is supported both from a licensing and a technical perspective. You cannot use the SBS 2011 Essentials or SBS 2011 Standard server as a Hyper-V host or to run the RDS server role. You may use the Premium Add-on to run the Hyper-V server role and host VOSEs and run the RDS server roles and all its role services, e.g., RD Session Host

Virtualization and the Premium Add-On.

You may install and use one copy of the Premium Add-on server software as a POSE or a VOSE on a licensed server. If run as a VOSE, you may run an additional instance of the operating system on a physical machine in order to run hardware virtualization software, provide hardware virtualization services, or run software to manage and service operating system environments on the licensed server. This server software must be run joined to an SBS 2011 domain. All other VOSE workloads require their own license.

Once you have SBS 2011 you will have a Windows server 2008 and you can use that as a Guest.

Seems based on that it's a legal configuration, as it should be.

I have premium and want to run SBS on the metal and the 2008 as a guest.

I can't see why MS would care from a licensing perspective if I did this, since I have used each license 1 time.
