Hi There!

Whilst the coverage and stability of the Unifi Pro AP has been pretty good for me, I find I am now in need of WPS and am having trouble accessing the device remotely, I was wondering if anyone could chime in with advice.

I was thinking of running a second AP which has WPS, and basically connecting it to the UAP Pro, I just wanted to know what downsides there were?

Secondly, despite being 99.9% sure there is nothing blocking the controller from seeing the AP, I can't see it from one of my PC's and I could only get it working from a laptop if I reverted to running Java 1.7 instead of 1.8. This didn't help the PC make a connection.

I can SSH to to the AP from the PC I can't connect the controller software too.

Any ideas?

How sure are you that the AP is able to resolve the UNIFI dns address? I've not done it but one of my guys has SSH'd into a UAP device which stopped reporting in to the console and was able to test and found that the DNS was not resolving correctly.

I assume you have the one controller for multiple sites?

Or am I coming at this from the wrong angle?

I have one AP and the controller software is installed on 2 PC's. One I can access the AP from, the other I am unable to.

You shouldn't be trying to use the controller software in 2 places.

Ideally you have the controller running at all times and it keeps in touch with the APs.

If you don't have it running all the time that is fine - but run it from ONE place. The controller software holds all the config for your wireless setup and it adopts and configures the APs appropriately.

Your second PC (unless you restore the config from the other) will have to adopt the AP, after which it will have to be reconfigured on your second PC. Same process to go back to the other one.

Unifi is NOT the same as most consumer APs - where all config is managed on the AP. Unifi APs are "dumb" and config is pushed to them by the controller software.

If you want to manage it from two places - configure the controller software to run as a service, then access it remotely - i.e. https://pc1:8443

Most likely that first controller sends its inform URL to the AP and you have to specifically change this inform url. Google layer 3 methods for UAP adoption.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

I am not trying to run it in two places, I want it on my home PC, but I couldn't get it going, so I loaded it on a second computer and it's working there. Just trying to work out how to get it going on the other PC, then I can stop using it on the second.

If you have it on 2 PC's you'll run into all sorts of problems.

ugh, ok, well yes ok, however the only reason I don't have it on only one was because the controller on the first machine wouldn't find the AP.

Can someone point me in the right direction as to my second question re another AP on the network which supports WPS and whether that will produce a drop in performance?

UniFi doesn't support WPS - and WPS itself is horrible anyway, it's been cracked so many times that you should never have it enabled on a network.

Well sadly, it's the only method the aircon units we have connect to our mobile devices for remote control and monitoring so I'll have to take my chances.

Yes yes I have done that already, TWICE.

I am unable to see the AP from the computer I want the controller on. I can ping it and ssh to it, but the controller software can't see it

Any local firewalling on the PC you are trying to set it up on?

Did you hard reset the AP back to default config or just a soft reset?

Does the AP show up in the controller software at all? Pending? Read to Adopt?

When you SSH what credentials are you using?

When you SSH what is the inform URL the AP is looking for?

If you have local DNS create an entry for unifi pointing to your PC and reboot the AP.

When you ssh into the AP can you ping the PC from the AP? Ping other network items like printers? Ping 'unifi'?
