Hey guys,
OK went to the Orcon DC in Northcote from around 2300 on Saturday night to 0200 on Sunday morning for normal maintenance tasks (replacing BBUs, installing new servers for testing, hard drives etc.). So about 5 minutes after I enter the alarm goes off. it's pretty loud but I figure I'll keep going and just put up with it because the security guard will be there in 10mins tops.

Come 0030 no one has turned up, called or anything so I call the corporate support helpline and go through to the on call engineer, it goes to his voicemail so I leave a voicemail. Keep going and he calls back (can't hear the phone due to the alarm) and leaves a message saying he can't come in remotely to turn the alarm off as the system is broken. I call him back saying turn the thing off as I'm getting pretty pissed off now. So he phones back says he'll come in to turn it off. He comes in around 0145 and turns it off.

It turns out the front door didn't shut properly and that set the alarm off. Weird I thought as it has a magnetic lock and spring arm thing. he leaves, i finish up and when I go to leave I see that from when he left the door hasn't closed correctly again and is stuck in the doorframe. There is still one internal security door with fingerprint/swipe access so le olde criminal can't get in taht easy but still. I'm guessing he just disabled the alarm as it should have gone off again.

This exact same thing happened around a month ago when I went in during the day on a Sunday.

I reckon that if there were say 4 people, you could have cleaned out at least 6 racks of equipment during that time and lets say your average rack has 100k of gear in it that would be pretty good pickings.

Anyway so their main security door is broken, their security alarm isn't monitored and their on call technician  isn't answering his phone straight away. What do you guys thin of that?

(Mod note: These issues have since been addressed - the OP will update shortly - XPD 23/9/11)

I think thats pretty slack! What sort of monitoring company have they got! As mentioned 4 or 5 guys armed with sledgehammers etc, wouldnt take long to get through that internal door, once through they could clear out all the racks and be gone.. hell they wouldn't even have to be in a rush..

If i was you i would remove the name of the company involved, pretty sure they wont want this plastered on the forums :)

Very glad to have switched to Maxnet last year. Orcon is pretty slack with their DC operations.

Hey guys just an update. We spoke with Orcon yesterday.

Door:
Apparently the door is too heavy for the frame (I'm guessing as they have bolted metal to it for security). They are getting a new frame made which should be installed in about a week.

Alarm:
Apparently they have some kind of monitoring but there was miscommunication between the security company and Orcon staff. They will put up signs with contact details for the security company within the datacenter.

Hi there,
Just wanted to give you an update from our end.
Firstly, the data centre has always been secure. Orcon has equipment in there so we take security just as seriously as all of you. Our business depends on it.
With regards to your posts above:
The reinforced steel door was proving too heavy for the door frame. Over time, this meant that the door sensors that are in place to inform us if the door is forced open, were being set off when people almost shut the door, but reopened it before the magnetic catch has engaged.
This in turn was setting off the alarm. The alarm company was aware of this issue, hence not coming out to this incident.
We have now reinforced the doorframe (and will be replacing with a newly fabricated unit), and the sensors are set to be re-aligned next week.
If the outer door was breached for some reason, the internal door would have stopped people from entering. The internal door requires the fingerprint system to allow access. We have a mantrap for added security and reply on 2 factor security.
Please let me reassure everyone that the data centre was, and always has, been secure. Security is paramount, we have spent millions ensuring it is a top-class facility, and fully intend to continually improving processes and security there.

edit: for a typo
