RedJungle: Yup. Gutted here too. One of my 'pinned tabs' that I use constantly every day.

I never access Google Reader on a browser. But I use FeedDemon on my laptop and NextGen Reader on Windows Phone. All kept nicely in sync through the Google Reader platform sync protocol...

davidcole: I never licked (sic) the google reader interface...

Me neither. I rather not have gooey stuff on my screens.

Yep, disappointed here too! Reeder for iPad has pride of place in my dock and I use it at least hourly, every day.
The dev has tweeted that he is working on an alternative to Google Reader for the feeds.
Still annoying.

Cheers,
Joseph

Annoying yes, but they had not updated it in a long time. Still it seems like half the web relies on it as both a service and application. Me too. Does anyone have a link to the source announcement?

Btw, any implications for feedburner in this announcement?

I've used the web/desktop Google Reader maybe a half dozen times in the several years I've used the service, has always been better on my phone via gReader Pro...

Investigating Feedly now.

Didn;'t like feedly when i finally got into it. Couldn't get the keyboard to skip to next article, and didn't find it very easy to quickly scan headings. I find google reader similar.

Newsblur was better - more like the style I'm used to, but again browser based - blegh

Google seem to do this quite a bit, they shut down google labs a few years back to much opposition, even from the likes of MIT. With all the changes going on with the way G+ handles privacy (ie once you get a g+ account there is no more anonymity for the rest of your google services) I guess the google mantra is subject to ....change

FeedDemon will cease to exist after 1st July as well. It will continue to work without Google synchronisation if you install it in standalone mode. Make sure you have the installer downloaded because once it's gone, it's gone...

Just to give you folks an idea I posted an entry in my blog on how Google Reader going away could impact our site:

So dumb.  If they want to take out services nobody uses, how about G+ as a prime candidate?  I really don't think it would be missed.

I've been in exec partners meetings for an "expression of interest" in the company and comments from the employees who work there goes along the lines of "ads are our business, not search - if we can't sell ads, we have no interest in serving that particular market"

Granted that it is possible to incorporate ads in RSS feeds in reader but given the niche of tech savvy users who will either not approve or get around it.

They come across as snobbish in my view from my exposure with them
