Really!?!

Of course.

He's running one site.

Sure he might need to not put 10mb images on it, but I get the impression his stuff is text and dynamic more than heavy graphical content such as videos.

Whist you're probably not going to see "unlimited" on any .nz hosts, you'll find plans that will generally suit a CMS with a couple of GB storage, email, etc, for a similar price you're paying overseas.

Depending on the nature of the club, you may even find a host who'll put it up for free if it's not too demanding on the systems. Just reach out to some providers and explain what you need and what your budget is, etc.

You can get LAMP hosting in .nz at competitive prices, but the demand for that platform is low and the software is expensive.

That was true 5+ years ago. ASP.NET/SQL Is not usually more expensive than LAMP with most decent hosters in NZ these days (i.e. ones that aren't simple resellers of bulk overseas hosters).

The biggest annoyance I find with having something hosted overseas is that their maintenance windows tend to be in the middle of our business day.

My overseas host has uptime between 99.5 and 99.9% most months, often 100%, according to various monitoring systems I use. Maintenance windows may be during our day, but they're exceedingly rare.

Maintenance times are always excluded from SLAs, so really all you're confirming is that your app/site is adequately redundant or your provider never does patching :)

My uptime is absolute, not less patching times. Most linux systems can be patched without the server being restarted, and an upgrade/restart of (say) apache could probably be automated to complete in seconds. I've never had a security issue, so I also assume patching is done fine. All in all I think it means I have a good, professional hosting firm.

I'm going to stick with my overseas host for the moment, because they give me what I want at the price I want to pay. Up to now, and I've been on here for about 4 years now, my up time has been (and I kid you not) 100%. I only use my main site for advertising, my computer club and demos of what my firm can do, so it wouldn't be a problem anyway. All of the software I've written up to now has been hosted on internal servers. Have you guys seen my site? I'm new to this site so I can't post a link, so I've just been told, but my URL is in my profile.

I think that will likely be the case. Cheap linux hosting often has thousands of users on the same server, so the cost can be spread across all those users. But load and reliability can be variable. But for more specialist hosting, you may only have a handful, and in a small market like NZ, the only people buying hosting from NZ are likely to be mainly NZ websites. There are only a limited number of people who would buy that sort of hosting. US hosting has the advanage that it is good for anyone in the world, with good load speeds in my places around the world.
The other thing that can add to the costs is backups and the quality of hardware. Some hosts do heaps of backups, while some only do daily or weekly ones.
The other thing with US hosting, is that you will find that the support is now often contracted out by people in India or out of Asia, as often the english in the support tickets isn't that great. While real NZ hosting is almost always supported from staff in NZ, so cost of wages is higher.

I know the host I use sub contracts out to India, but that's not a problem for me, (Well it is, but that's another story). I understand all the arguments about higher prices in NZ, but this isn't a commodity that you buy in you local supermarket, it's a global market, and if the states can offer cheaper prices and better service, then that where people will go. Surely the business plan of NZ hosters should have taken this into account?

HostGator has all their support in the USA. If anyone wants a discount coupon I can do 20% off I think, I'm an affiliate - I use them myself for websites that get 2 million hits a month and was recommending them anyway, so I signed up to their program.

I gave up on NZ hosting 2 yrs ago, host mostly out of Aussie now.

NZ hosting provides good quality hosting, but their costs scare most away. My last NZhosting was with Sitehost.
