I want to start a new web site for a computer club, and I've been looking round for some good deals in web hosting in this country (NZ). I've been using a web hosting firm in the USA for about 4 years now, and have found them to be excellent, but for this new setup I thought I would remain 'in country' as it were.

However after extensive research I've found that New Zealand web hosting for the spec I want (ASP.Net 4.5, SQL server 2008R2 database and all the trimmings), are ridiculously expensive, and they are all limited and capped. The web host I use gives me unlimited traffic, unlimited disk space, unlimited sub domains, very cheap domain registration, unlimited emails and lots more besides, all for about $12.00 per month.

Please tell me, have I been looking in the wrong place, or are we getting ripped off? personally, I tend to the latter.

Please excuse this being in the wrong thread, I couldn't figure out how to post a new topic in any of the technical threads, and I'm too busy to look any deeper. Moderators, if you can move this thread to a better forum, please do.

How much would you expect to pay for these services hosted in New Zealand?

Servers cost about the same here. Bandwidth costs more for international, but putting a server in NZ you'd expect mostly national traffic. How do data centre costs compare?

Where are the most of your content consumers? In New Zealand or around the world? Host the content closer to your consumers. Or use a CDN service (even the free Cloudflare can help).

Local providers can't charge the same as their costs aren't the same.

If local providers charge traffic, then definitely use a service like Cloudflare to offset this volume.

Without knowing the profile of your service/site is hard to help define a strategy. I will leave to others to talk about hosting prices as I don't have personal experience with that.

Hiya Freitasm - My consumers are mainly in this country, with a few in UK. I'm afraid if the local providers' costs are higher, then maybe that's where we should be looking. I've just updated my profile with my company's website on it, I don't know if you'll be able to see it though?

I'm trying to determine why prices are higher. Is it server costs, hosting costs, higher profit, or just fewer people using the servers therefore less people to cover the costs?

Right Tim. Possibly a combination of Higher profit and fewer people. There's seems to be a culture of "You must use us because we're local" growing up here.

Pretty much everything you need costs more in NZ than the US. You simply can't compare them.

1. International data costs (massive in NZ, practically free in the US)
2. Power (power is hugely expensive in NZ)
3. Economy of scale (we got none, nobody from overseas wants NZ-based hosting, so the target market is tiny)
4. Space (real estate is much. much more expensive in NZ than the US)
5. Staffing (employment law is very good here for employees... which drives the cost of employment up c/w the US)
6. Hardware costs (you try buying servers here for the same cost as the US, not even close).

I'm sure the list goes on, but you get the picture...

I'd go with some cheap US based hosting and stick CloudFlare in front of it, job done.

Shady why are you using that platform?

You can get LAMP hosting in .nz at competitive prices, but the demand for that platform is low and the software is expensive.

Hosting .net 4.5 isn't that expensive, its SQL server that is expensive. If you can go with mySQL you can get some pretty high cap stuff for maybe $10-$15 a month.

Why not just host it your self on the end of an ADSL connection from home?

How much traffic is your content getting?

Try Openhost, not bad pricing and 1x SQL Server 2008 DB on some plans.
Don't think they support .net 4.5 yet, but shouldn't be far away

They also have a ton of options

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.
